[SOLVED] Help choosing a cooler for overclocking i9-10900, w RAM clearance

Hey all,

I completed my first streaming build a month or so ago.
Turns out I’m doing more intense stuff in OBS and After Effects than expected, so I want to correct my mistake and upgrade my CPU.
Looking into getting a new i9-10900. I had a bad experience trying to install the 212 EVO, so I ended up using the stock cooler for the first month of use.

Now that I’m looking at a much faster CPU, I need a cooling unit that will:

• Be easy to install, easier than the 212
• have enough clearance for my current RAM
• be able to handle eventual overclocking of the new i9

Can anyone recommend something that will fit all that?
Also, will my current PSU be able to handle the new CPU?

So you know, you will need a new motherboard for a 10900. Finding one for a decent price will be difficult as well. If planning to change the motherboard and CPU I’d go with a Ryzen 3900x. If planning to get a 10900k, then you will want a noctua nh14, nh15 or an AIO water cooler.

In reference to your PSU question, I wouldn’t use it for a system that’s gonna be stressed a lot. It’s a good office pc basic task type PSU.

If I get the 9900k instead, which I think would work with my motherboard, do the same cooler recommendations apply?

A 9900k will work. You’ll have to test it’s capability with that boards VRM, holding a sustained max clock might cause a bit of throttling. Definitely want a big air cooler I think with a 9900k to push air across that VRM.

I would look at the 10700K instead of the 9900K as it is 100 bucks cheaper and runs cooler. In fact it is a 9900K which a better tim and shaved top design...so this would mean the Z490 motherboards and a mid range one like the Gigabyte Vision D, Asus Strix E or F, MSI Unify etc are all ready for next gen PCIe 4 and you will be able to upgrade to Rocket Lake CPU's when they come out next year...

A 240/280mm AIO would do a great job if overclocking but a good Air cooler in the Noctua/Dark Rock range will also work great...
