Help: Computer Shutdown problem

Hey guys/gals, I have a problem with the shutdown process on my computer. When I press the "shut down" button, it will take anywhere from instantly to over 6 minutes to initiate the shutdown sequence (the time appears to be random). During this hang time, my mouse and keyboard is responsive, but I can't open any programs and Alt, Ctrl, Delete doesn't work.

I'm running:
Windows XP /w SP2
e6400
ASUS p5w deluxe
2x512mb OCZ Plat XTC 6400 ram (BIOS reads as 5300 for some reason)
320gb SATA seagate
eVGA 7600GT KO

Things I've noticed:
- the time to shutdown has no correlation to how long the computer has been on. I'm thinking clearing the pagefile doesn't have much to do with it (tried already)
- i've tried reinstalling Windows many times. On a fresh reinstall, the problem does not happen. Shutdown is consistently instant.
- I've tried installing my software one by one to try to isolate which program caused the problem, but everyone time I get the error at a different point. I *think* the problem only occurs after I get SP2.

Thanks for the reply, and no, the problem does not occur if I disable all the services/startup. In 5 shutdowns, all 5 were instant.

I've already been through the process of enabling them one by one and restarting my computer to isolate which service it could be. When I think I've found the right one, I disable the service, but the problem persists. I go on to disable the 2-3 last ones I enabled, try restarting a couple of times, but the problem still persists.

Then I start all over again...and each time it's a different service.

its not the services, its one your startup apps I think.

this time leave the services as normal and try just disableing the startup apps only and see what happens

but now you know your problems is software conflict, which reinstalling windows does not help, because as soon as you install the 2 or more softwares that are conflicting your problem is back.

I decided to keep my startup apps disabled. I feel no adverse effects...plus I feel like i'm getting faster boot times. my shutdown times are now always instant...and I can pinpoint the problem now if i wanted to in the future.

ok then now enable your apps 5 at a time and test the pc till you figure out which one/s are doing it
