Hi,

I have just had my house rewired and at the same time I ran CAT6a cable through the walls. The cables run from a central point where they are connected to a Netgear GS108 to wall sockets around the house. The internet is from Virgin Media's latest Home Hub and that is also connected to the GS108. If I connect a computer to any wall socket it works perfectly. I can see other PCs on the network and also connect to the internet.

The problem is I want more than one internet connection in each room. So for example in my Study I want to connect my TV and Computer and printer to the network. The plan was to put a Netgear GS105 (5 port) switcher in each room. However when I connect the devices to the GS105 and connect that switcher to the wall socket I can no longer see the internet or other computers on my network.

I get a limited connectivity icon in my Windows 8 system tray and if I run the windows troubleshooting wizard I get a message say "ethernet" does not have a valid IP configuration.

Could someone please help me with this problem or point me to a simple online guide on how to fix it. Iv'e read the FAQ but I am stuck.

Thanks in advance.

Mike.

Since your post says "I ran cat6 cable", did you follow the 568B color code? Did you have any test tools to determine that the runs were all done correctly? Are all the patch cables home made also? Did you have any way to test the patch cables?

The GS105 connected to the GS108 should work with no additional steps. If it doesn't then you have cable problems somewhere. Start by connecting the two with a commercial cable while in the same room to prove it.

That should work fine...

Are you sure the switch works, and you don't have a DoA switch? Tried another switch?

If you put it next to the GS108 and use a ~1 meter cable, does it work?

Did you terminate the Cat6A or is it pre-terminated? It's an absolute pain to do it within specs, I'm told. It's possible the PCs are more tolerant of a poor connection than the switches.

That was my first thought too. The cables were run by the electrician, but the installation was done by a network installation company. The patch cables are bought premade from a cable company in the UK. All cables were brand new.

I have just tested the cable using a cable tester both through the GS105 and directly from the wall socket and all 8 lights show fine. I have just tried another switcher and it now works fine. Seems I had a faulty GS105.

Thanks.
