Hey guys,
I'm building my very first custom build and I've come to a bit of a hiccup. Everything is in place and installed in the case. Everything is connected apart from the two case fans. Here is my basic spec:

CPU: Intel i5 4670K
RAM: 8GB
Motherboard: Asus Z87-K
Graphics: Asus 280X
Case: CM Storm Enforcer

Basically, I want to plug the two case fans (a large 200mm front and smaller 140mm back) into the motherboard via the 4 pin connections (there are two). It's a standard four pin input, but here's a pic:

The problem comes in how I connect it: the fans are three pin, but are attached to these connectors (I'm a noob, so I'm not very good with the names):

These won't fit in the four pin slot (obviously). I then came across some 4-pin peripheral connectors that came with the PSU. These fit on the end of the long 4-pin cables attached to the fans, and there are two connections, allowing one cable to be used. One end goes into the PSU, two ends are these adapters and a fourth end seems to fit the 4-pin motherboard connection in the first pic.

However, the motherboard manual states that the black cable must be on the ground pin, but this cannot happen as the PSU cable connection is wired red, black, black, yellow (I can put up a photo if that helps), so red or yellow would be on the ground pin instead. So, I basically want to know what my options are. Can I connect fans using a peripheral cable? If so, should I leave them plugged into the PSU or try plug them into the fan input on the motherboard? Or would I just be better keeping the three pins per fan?

Any help is appreciated guys, as I say, I'm extremely new to this and could do with some advice. If more pics or descriptions would help I'll try my best to do that :)

Using 5V and 12V you can achieve 7V using 5V as the ground. They provided those connectors to you as a way to make the fans quieter. If they are straight through adapters then it is just allowing you to power them from your power supply and not the motherboard.

Easiest thing to do would be to buy the appropriate adapters or cable extensions from your retailer of choice.

@Eximo: So if I were to put the red (+5 volts) on the ground pin it would work (or be safe and not blow up at least)?

@Ironsounds: Each fan has three wires - the front has a red, white and black; back has yellow, white and black

Hello... The RED or Yellow wires will be the + Voltage of the Fan...
The Black wires will be the - Voltage of the Fan...
The White wires will be the Tach Speed of the Fan...
If you hook into your POwer Supply you have two choices...
12 volt (Yellow) to Black ( Gnd ) and full speed operation.
5 volt (RED) to Black ( Gnd ) and half speed operation.
The White Molex connector is very easy to Release the PINS out for custom quick connection, get those tabs released/pushed in with a Ball point Pin, and pull out the back.

There are companies that sell every kind of adaptor for your connection to your Motherboard.
