Question Help! external drive is now CD drive

Have an external hard drive (SSD) from an old laptop, it was working fine as storage until I downloaded a program that to install, turned the hard drive into a CD-ROM drive. Now can't access anything else that was on it. Tried recovery software but none of them recognize the drive. In windows disk manager it only shows up as the CD drive, no extra space. Couldn't format through the simple windows way. Any suggestions?
