I had some issues with my hard drive but was able to fix it by installing a new control board. But now it seems my files are gone. Before I fixed it I kept trying to partition it using different software. Could that have deleted or reformatted the hard drive? what are some of the best recovery software free and purchased. thanks

If the files have been deleted, then you MAY be able to get them back. Personally, I use this free software, Glary Undelete, to retrieve files deleted accidently from the recycle bin. You could download it from google and give it a try.
Hope you get your files back.

Hey there. I'm sorry to have to say it, but you probably won't be able to recover some of your data, because of the partitioning and whatever else you've installed. If the drive was formatted for some reason, whatever you tried to do like write something new, make new partitions etc. - that rewrites on top of your data which you might have been able to recover otherwise. Here's a link to a thread which might help you with the recovery software: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
I hope that you are able to recover most of your files.

Good luck.
