Hi all, I'm Marc from Preston and I need some help. I was heavily involved in custom PC's from around 95-05 but I took what I thought was the easy and cheap route around then and stuck to consoles for gaming and mid range laptops for d2d computing. So other than what I have been reading over the past couple days I am way outdated in the PC scene.

Onto my question which is motivated by the current crop of consoles not really appealing and the looming advent of VR headsets and SteamOS has got me hankering after a PC.

My initial thought is do I build a cheap PC along the lines of an Athlon X4 860K and R9 270X or A10 7870K system to ease me back in and test the water and If I get the bug I then let this replace my PS3/RasPI on HTPC duty. My worry here is that I will outgrow the system very quickly. If I went this route I would expect a decent 720p gaming experience which I would be happy with in the very short term.

My next thought is do I spend more and get an FX 8350 and R9 280 which could double as an editor for my home video footage, but would not fit into my requirements for a HTPC when I outgrow it due to power requirements. If I went this route I would expect decent 1080p gaming which I would be happy with in the medium to longer term.

The problem with the FX 8350 system is that it does not feel much of a financial jump to an i5 4690k and GTX 970 which I feel would likely give me enough performance to keep me happy for the next 2-3 years and is likely what I would end up building to replace the cheap system I suggested if I really get back into PC gaming. Again I would be expecting decent 1080p gaming and I know that this system would also be able to double duty as a reasonable editor for video too.

So there we have it, do I go cheap and risk feelin unfulfilled even put off PC gaming? But leave an upgrade route and have hardware I can re-purpose.

Do I shoot in the middle and not leave myself an upgrade route if it's not up to scratch unless I can offload a 2nd hand system.

Or do I just bite the bullet and get the system that almost guarantees to impress me.

Also am I way off the mark with the core components I'm looking at? Would any of thes even give me access to a decent experience with PC gaming, Steam OS and the soon to arrive VR headsets?

Hopefuly you guys can help me stem my indecisiveness.

Thanks in advance and all the best.

Also, sorry if I have committed any community faux pas

Marc

Build a solid midrange pc . Upgrade path is a minor consideration since all the hardware is outdated in a couple of years and you would most likely build another midrange pc [ using the money you didnt blow on high end stuff last time ]

I think i5/ GTX 970 is an excellent build for the next couple of years .

You should be under $1000 for a build like that , and you'd have 95% of the performance of a $2000 build
