Hi all,

Wondering if I can get some advice on this. Ive had my old pc that was built in 2011 in storage for the last 2 years because of lack of space. That's not an issue anymore so I've got it out. It essentially doesn't work very well anymore to put it bluntly. I've play very few games on it, mainly strategy and especially total war like the upcoming three kingdoms game this year. I want a decent set up for that without spending too much money. Wondering if anything (such as CPU, power supply or ram) can be salvaged to save money for maybe a decent GPU etc. Really know very little about the set up etc so not sure what's best. Plan was to replace motherboard add an extra 8gb ram and maybe add a gtx 1050ti. Any advice would be much appreciated ,

Current set up

G.SKILL RIPJAWS-X 8GB(2X4)16 C9
Intel CORE I5 2400 6MB
Novatech POWERSTATION 600W MODUL
Seagate 7200 1TB 6GB/S
KingstonSSDNOW UV400 120GB
XFX HD6870 1GB GDDR5
ASROCK H61M-S MOTHERBOARD

Solution
Here's the thing I think....there's not much you are going to be able to use on a new MB because first off....you have DDR3 memory....so that won't work and it would be pointless to keep the CPU on a new MB....although you could reuse the drives.

I think another option would be to keep what you have and go with a 1050 Ti or even a 1060 and up the RAM to 16 GB and I think it would be a halfway decent gaming machine that would probably do most games at 1080p ultra 60 fps.

Although....being I'm not familiar with the PSU....I might get something I would trust a bit more like a Corsair RM series or Seasonic.

What is your geographic location? It helps to know that when sending links and finding sales, also what is the budget range you are looking at?

What you can Reuse with no issue
.......................
Case- "will lack USB 3" "Will have less efficient cooling, newer cases place the power supply on the bottom."
SSD- Not the fastest or most reliable but should be fine for a Boot drive
Seagate 7200 1TB 6GB/S- Should work without any issue
Windows? depending on the version otherwise just use W10 unregistered.

Questionable
.......................
Novatech POWERSTATION 600W MODUL- I've only seen these on shelves in the UK on a vist some 8 years ago.. It would probably be fine with a low power system but I wouldn't even consider pushing it.

Outdated and can be sold to recoup some building cost.
......................
ASROCK H61M-S MOTHERBOARD
I5 2400
RIPJAWS-X 8GB(2X4)

As a 'cheap' option you might consider stepping up into a i7 2600 and an RX 4xx or 5xx GPU. I think that route would be cheapest, particularly used on both, and buy another couple of years of usability.

On that generation of i7 I would honestly suggest looking for a Dell OptiPlex SFF case outfitted with one on the cheap and take the proc out. You should be able to score an entire system for ~$100. You could (theoretically) take your i5 slap back in it and resell it to recoup some costs.

Thanks everyone, really do appreciate the feedback. Firstly I'm based in the UK. I'm currently running Windows 7 on it but haveing a few problems since I got it back out of storage like network connectivity and windows not being able to install updates. So plan is to get everything off it I need and onto the Nas drive and then start with a clean boot of windows 10.

I think with the comments I'll definitely look to replace the Power supply. I think when I bought this I opted for the cheapest option so will be safest to replace this

Cheapest option

As suggested above buy a i7 2600, it's on par with a i3 7100 and close to a stock Ryzen 1200 and will run you £80-£100 on eBay.

Because of how well a i7 2600 still fairs in gaming to increase FPS beyond that you would want to start looking at a Ryzen 5 or i5.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor (£142.94 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: MSI - B450M GAMING PLUS Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard (£74.95 @ Box Limited)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (£114.82 @ CCL Computers)
Total: £332.71

This could be lowered by using 8G(2X4) RAM and a lower processor like a 1500X which would make it about $55 cheaper "£277.71". Going with a Intel i5 would add $32 "£362.71" .

A few more £ and would get the Ryzen 7 instead..
