I wrote a tutorial on this "Overclocking Dell BTX Computers". Are you really limited to buying from your local stores.? . Justajohn reports that X3xxx Xeons work without any other mods. They are LGA775 CPUs. X33363 = Q9550. Go to Delidded.com http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-775-cpus/. X3370= Q9650. Some games don't use 4 cores some do. 780s respond to SetFSB method.Improve you cooling first. Pinmod for more volts next 1.4V. is considered safe limit. Or try Intel listed 1.3875 max. if you like. Then ramp up FSB. Dual core would be best with your PSU limit. Justajohn got an X3230 2.66 to run 3.09Ghz. I think he just FSB'd it. Have a backup plan. Bootable USB with O/C software on it, System restore points. A crash in software O/C is...
Q9650/9550 are same power as Q6600 and much faster. GTX750Ti low profile is common and runs within the power of the PCIe slot.
GTX750 is 65W, Q9650 is 90W= 155W You need more RAM to run 2GB GPU. 5-6Gb with 32 bit OS, 8GB with 64bit is good )max. 16GB). Dell PSUs are very conservatively rated compared to "advertised" aftermarket ratings. The small rating reflects the fact that there are few bays, and expansion slots in SFF, so it cant be loaded up with a lot of extra drives and cards to consume extra power. Be sure you have latest BIOS from Delland get EUFI compatible Video card.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/555412/dell-optiplex-780-sff-graphics-card-power-supply-help/ It's been done before.

Q9650 costs more than building a new pc right now. Why do people want to upgrade something which wasn't top end back 5 years ago, just cash a $100 more and you would build something way better than any upgrades you could do to this pc. If you cant afford even $100 then you should not be building a new pc generally.

Q9550s are $40, Qx9650s can be found for $80, Q9650s are in between. The GTX750 EUFI can be moved to a newer computer, so can the DDR3 RAM. I don't know how many times I've had "Experts" here say "Get an ATX" Problem Solved. "Dells can't be "Overclocked" Problem Solved. The truth is a little different. A lot of people with little money, and no experience are buying refurbished Dells and want to improve them. I'm willing to spend my time helping them. If you have something better to do why don't you go do it?

thanks for you taking your time to help me but my local stores only have q6600 and q8300. so any chance to upgrade my cpu to these?
and can you tell me if i only upgrade my gpu to gt 730 ddr5, new aaa titles can run on my e8400 at 30 fps with 720p res. i have a friend who has the exactly same gt 730 ddr5 with 3rd gen i3 he is running assassin's creed syndicate at 30 fps with 720p res and medium settings.

Either one of those will work. Some games use the CPU a lot , and some games very little. Ask in the forums for those games. I don't know. On old computers I always put in the maximum and hope it's enough so I don't know personally what that card will do. E8600 might be the best for you if you can find one in your area. A dual core over 3Ghz would be nice.

Don't save settings until after you've tested them well. There are not a lot of people who have done this so you may find yourself somewhat on your own if you have a problem.

You might consider getting a 2nd hard drive like the one you have now. Load the OS and software tools into it and do your O/C on that one. Then replace your original with it. The risk is a bad setting can make the HDD "toxic". Then when you get your settings tested you can apply them to your original HDD with your games and data.
