I have a optiplex 790 with a i7 2600. I would like to upgrade to a gtx 1050 ti or a 960. However, I only have a 240w psu. This is not my problem though. I don't mind replacing the psu, but I really would rather not replace the mobo. But due to it's pci power limit, I see there could be a problem. However, it does not say anywhere on the mobo that the pcie is limited to 35w. PLEASE HELP!

Solution
you have to understand that your best bet would be, CHANGE PSU, and purchase a GPU that requires PSU power connectors (6pin/8pin) because that will be the main power source. Yes, the GPU would still draw power from motherboard, which would... lets say be more of "powering card to run" and the "load draw" lets say, would come from the 6/8pin connectors. As well as, stay away from anything AMD for this upgrade.

Here, have a read on this

So, what kind of card would you recommend? I know if upgrade the gpu this compy will kill most games. Right now it does ok, but I want better.

you basically have several things to overcome...

size of your PC case. if it's the SFF then.. you gonna be limited to... pretty much... crap.

need to check your bios, to see which kind of bios settings you got, Legacy or UEFI. this could lock you down to certain options only as well

unfortunetly the other thing is that, it may not even be a "sure thing" for a GPU to run even with external power, because the power management comes from the GPU bios, which you cannot change. I don't see it being an issue, but... depending on the "card" it could be.

you may also need to modify your case to fit a new PSU

(im gonna get off in a few minutes, you may want to see to repost with this extra info)
