This is sort of long... sorry in advance. If you need anymore information please let me know
Also, my replies could be a bit delayed due to work.
So I bought a:
Western Digital Black WD4003FZEX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
I purchased this recently (less than a month). When I first got the drive, I ran crystaldiskinfo for smart data and HD Tune pro quick error scan. No problems.
1. I initially connected it to my computer (SATA II), initialized, formatted (GPT) 4 partitions. Moved data on to the drive.
2. Removed HDD and connected it to a "Rosewill RX358-S BLK External HDD enclosure" (Bought this is 2010 but can't find information on this exact model on sites like newegg. They only show a newer, updated version). When connecting to eSATA no problems, BUT when switching to USB causes all or most of the partitions to become RAW and require re-formatting.
** Now the Rosewill box does state that it supports up to 1.5TB but I read newegg reviews and some people said they got it to work for 2TB/4TB drives so I gave it a try. However, There was one particular review that stated that the controller couldn't handle GPT and some apple/mac format. I thought I would try myself nonetheless.
3. I did connect it back to my computer (SATA II) but I can't remember what happened. I think sometimes it was fine and sometimes it wasn't. I repeatedly connected from computer, USB/eSATA HDD enclosure multiple times to find the root cause so I can't remember the exact order.
4. The main thing is, at some point I tired to reformat (windows 7 quick) these RAW partitions but it took way too long. I assumed it got stuck/hung. Therefore, I ended up powering off the drive. I think it was when the HDD was in the Rosewill HDD enclosure. This only happened ONCE. Ever since then I have left the HDD in my computer HDD bay, only connecting it manually when I need to move back files.
5. Every since then when I powered the HDD on. These odd noises started occurring. On initial power on, there were some "rough" noises like older HDD when they are trying to "think/process data." This only only occur at power on. Then at certain times when moving data, this "thinking/processing data" noise (characteristic of older/aged HDD) would occur. I believe this was particularly the case with the first 2TB partition on the drive.
Therefore, I ran WD Data Lifeguard, I ran the extended test. no problems. I ran the long HD Tune Pro error scan. no problems. Smart data from all programs, including crystaldiskinfo, states everything as normal.
However, it makes this odd but light "thump" noise in a "tick-tock" pattern. The pattern repeats in regular intervals of 2-3 seconds. To put simply:
thump-thump (pause 2-3 seconds) thump-thump... **I am not accessing the HDD, it is idling**
There are times when there is no noise for about 10+ seconds.
If I put my finger on the drive, at each thump, I can feel a good vibration; Like something is bumping into something else?
I recall the last time I connected the HDD (SATA II) the noises weren't this regular.
I think it is getting progressively worse?
I have recorded an audio file of ~15ish seconds but I don't know how I can go about posting/attaching it. I have already looked up various HDD failure sounds but none are similar. Any recommendations for uploading this file so that you can hear it for yourselves will be most helpful or I can email you I guess?
This is just speculation, but I know this drive has 5 platters and I am guess arms/heads in between each platter. I think the problem is originating from one of the platters governing the first 2TB partition on the drive.
I have nearly 2TBs of data and I don't have any place to put it honestly. I need to know if this drive is on the fritz so that I can purchase another drive and move all my data.
Sorry, it's so long... I appreciate all the time you have spent reading my post.
Thanks in advance
