I have a problem with my printer all has been well until about a month ago,
then all of a sudden it stopped printing yellow. I did all the usual things
cleaned the contacts on the cartridge and on the printer and it would work
fine for about 1/4 of a page, then no more yellow. So I decided to buy a
new print cartridge, this worked fine for a bout 2 weeks then all of a
sudden the red packed up, done the same cleaning as before but this time it
still won't work. Anyone got any ideas as to what's wrong with it and will
it be easy to fix.

Thanks

Charlie

Does the same thing on HP deskjet 842C, and on a lot of other hewlett
packard printers.

Perhaps there is a problem with the head capping seal on your particular
printer? eg If the seal is missing/damaged perhaps the heads are drying out?

Work out if it's the head or the electrical contacts by "blotting" the head
gently with some kitchen paper - If the ink is flowing you should see three
similar rectangles of colour. If Red is missing then the heads are probably
dry. If you see lots of red ink then it's probably an electrical problem
somewhere. I _have_ seen one or two carts with an air lock of some kind.
The problem is usually fixed by wrapping the cart in kitchen paper and
putting it "heads down" into TWO plastic bags one inside the other. Twirl
the cart round your head while chanting a favorite mantra (just kidding) eg
so that centrifugal force pushes ink towards the heads. Open with care and
clean up. This trick is sometimes needed after refilling the carts to get
them going again.
