help...hp5pscanner and xp

I'm trying to install my hp5p scanner with win xp sp2.i have installed
deskscan 2.9 from hp website and have a new scsi card pci card which device
manager says is working. the error message I get when I start desk scan is
"sorry scanner is be used by another application."
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Make sure ASPI is installed correctly.
It doesn't come with WinXP.

Part of the download is aspichk.exe which can check current installation
if you have one.

This may not be the problem, but is necessary, so start here?
