i have this card i purchased 4 moths ago... its a 4850 with gddr5 memory..
its safe to say that it has the RV770 chip on it...
now..
i OCed it to
core@760mhz.
memory@4050mhz
this pretty much shud equal/exceed any stock 4870...
THE CATCH.....
i have this craptastic tin can<gonna go i7 in december>-
3.87 ghz pent d.. PRESLER<ya... the old one>
2 gb kingston
600 w cooler master psu...

Idle- 55- 60 c.. <31 c ambient>

WTF? is the F'ing Problem???????
the cpu bottleneck cannot be SO great..... <can it?>
i Oced the cpu frm 3.00 to 3.87 ghz....
and still these results..<although fallout's performance did increase...>

Full system specs, BTW a 4850 with GDDR5 ram is not an option, there were no 4850s made with GDDR5 ram that i know of because that is all that separates it from a 4870 aside from a slight difference in clock rate.
What CPU do you have as an old single threaded P4 even clocked that high would not be able to keep up with a 2.8GHz modern dual core in those games.
 


wait ... you're running a 4-year-old Pentium chip? That's your problem, not the 4870.

Also, I'd be curious to know what kind/speed of memory that 2GB is. With a chip that old, I'd guess the motherboard supports DDR2 at the best. If it's regular DDR, or DDR2 with a low speed or high latency, that could also be bogging things down.

the stock speeds <700/3600> yield pretty much the same results...
my chip is a 775 for gods sake... its not that old... makes me feel like my grandpa..
check out palit ati fight on google..... my card was the cause of it......
 
Well, if you want to know what's slowing down the machine, you can either accept the fact that your CPU is three generations old, or you can ignore that and insist that it's something else. It's probably not. The RAM could be a factor if it's also old-standard and slow, but only one part of it. Fact is, a Pentium D is not a top- or even middle-of-the-line gaming chip these days, and on most new games, it'll be barely struggling by.
 

Did you try running any benchmarks with the cpu @ stock? Once the cpu reaches a certain temp it will throttle back the performance to try to prevent your chip from melting.

What OS are you running? Vista eats 2gb for breakfast.
 


You can never know anything for sure, but I would be REALLY surprised if it was anything else. You could probably double the performance just by dropping in a mid-range Core Duo for cheap. Given your setup, that's about 100 times more likely than a perfectly modern graphics card just going haywire for no apparent reason.
 
Recommendations for a CHEAP and LOW POWER c2d.....

The processor u gonna recommend is not going to be used for gaming <at least after dec>
so pls.. try to be cheap and power is a HUGE concern....

AMD cpus are great, they're almost same penforming than intels but they cost alot less.
i dont like ati because of their crappy drivers, but cpus are great. i currently have a phenom iix4 955 at stock 3.2ghz, the phenom costs 180$ while the i7 920 costs 280$(or a little more depending on where you buy it), and the difference in gaming is being just 1-2 fps(or even less) on most games. you get almost the same for 100$ less.
 


I've got nothing against AMD processors (if that's what you want for your new machine), but I don't think you can put one in your old machine without also getting a new motherboard if that's what you were talking about. (If not, I apologize; don't mean to be redundant).

Honestly, for a socket 775, the lower-end C2 Quad chips have come down in price enough that they're only about 20 bucks more than a decent C2 Duo. Things like the Q8200 are about as good a deal as you can find for the price. One word of caution, though: If you're using an older 775 motherboard, double-check that it's C2D and/or C2Q compatible, and that it has the bus speed to handle one of those chips.

If your board does support a C2 Quad, you may just try a good one of those (e.g. Q9550) out and be happy enough with it that you can put off the i7 machine for a year or two. C2 Quad chips are not at the very cutting edge anymore, but still right up there with the top tier.
 
nah... the i7's gonna be super high end.....<rams, ssds and all the stuff>
i just want a download rig which consumes VERY little power...
c2d is a good choice considering that..... c2q? i dunno.... help is needed here....
 
If it's just gonna be a download rig that you want to sip power than get a really low end weak Pentium Dual Core or Core 2 Duo (Don't confuse Pentium Dual Core with Pentium D Pentium Dual Core is just another name for the weak C2Ds). It would mop the floor with the Pentium D you have now.

Although if I remember correctly Pentium D mobos can't be used with 45nm Core 2s because of voltage regulators or something.
