hello,

first, i would like to apologize for my english. my main language is french :)

on July 2017 i tried to install windows 7 on a usb key. to do this i had to use CMD Diskpart and the result was very bad because it look like it converted my "WD my book" 3To to a 2To hard drive + it became a hard disk drive instead of a removable device storage.

steps i did:
1 diskpart
2.list disk
3 select disk (put your number of your hdd for exsample select disk 1) in my case it was disk 3 (32Go)

4 clean
5 create partition primary
6 select partition 1
7 Active
8 Format fs=NTFS Quick
9 Assign
10 Exit

once i saw that, i used getdataback to recover lost files. it did work, i recovered most of my files except the musics i made myself. i did something wrong and i can't remember very well what.
the thing is when the program finished the scan i saw the folder "my music" (wich is where i stored the music i make) and this is where i don't remember what i did because i moved the folder into an other folder but i think i did this in the data recovery files program. after the recovery completed, i did not check if all the files was there because i was 100% sure everything was there but last week when i wanted to listen to my music i realized that my music was nowhere on my WD mybook so i freaked and i started a scan with getdataback to see if i could recover the musics and they wasn't there at all ! only the files i actually had on my WD mybook could be found. not wanting to accept it, i started an other scan but the result was the same.

a couples of days later i decided to go for an other scan but when i looked carefully i saw an other partition named "windows microsoft reserved p..." on my WD mybook. https://imgur.com/a/7zXlZ.
when i scanned this partition, it quickly found 13 files so i stopped the scan to look at these file that were named 0000234.mp3, 0000235.mp3, ect... and it was some of my musics. i recovered a song i make that i liked and that song was supposed to last 2 mins and it lasted 8 mins (parasite after 2 mins to 8 mins). so i had faith to recover them all so i started the scan for a huge 8hours and after the scan completed there was some mp3 and flv files but my musics still was not there except the 13 files i found when i tried the first scan. i had nearly 50 files in that folder i lost, some mp3 and some fruity loop files.

i really don't know what to do, it kill me and i have no other backup. do you guys think there is something i can do to recover the files ? is there a way to factory reset my WD mybook so it come back like before ? (into device with removable storage), will it help the data recovering if factory reset ? also is it ok if the WD mybook is NTFS ?

thank you very much for your time 😀

Just because you can see the file names on the disk to recover does not mean that they are actually there. When you did a diskpart and then formatted the drive with the utility, you basically wiped all the information on the disk for the files on it, once you start using that disk, you are over-writing the files with other info. Without professional data recovery it may be impossible to get your data back fully. The recovery software just does it's best to sort out what files are there and tries to get them back. It may not find all the files. Like taking a made puzzle then smashing it around the room. You not only have to put it back, but if you lose pieces under the couch, cats eat them, you will never have the full puzzle...
You can download a free recovery utility nmed Recuva from www.piriform.com and run that to find any recoverable files from any drive in the machine. On the second screen you'll see is a number of choices so just click the radio button beside Music and you will not get all the usual rubbish being brought back.

Bon chance.

i don't know. what do you mean seeing hidden files and system files ? oh and i forgot to say that the 13 files i found was in a folder called "lost files" but i should've have nearly 50 files (mp3 and .flp)

In Windows 7 File Explorer, select Tools from the top menu then Folder Options. Under the View tab, you'll see tick boxes beside Show Hidden Files and Folders and lower down, Hide System Files and Folders.

Put a tick in the first and remove the tick from the second. Click on Apply and OK your way out.

Your Desktop will now show some extra feint icons and that shows you can see all the files you want to so go back into File Explorer and see if your missing MP3 files show up.

That is what happens to recovery programs when they show you a file name or even a file that can work in a bit, but crashes or end up looking funny, it found some pieces but not all.
