I am an idiot. I have two different computers that i am working on. One is an old HP Compaq 6200 Pro SFF with a 260w PSU. The other is my current Gaming Rig with a Thermaltake SMART 550W PSU. My new GPU had just arrived, and like an idiot, i plugged it into te HP Compaq and booted it up. I got all the way into the windows loading screen before it shut down. I pulled the card out and now the PC has some strange symptoms; when power cable is plugged in, no lights show on the mobo and it wont turn on. unplug it, wait a few minutes, plug the power cable back in and mobo lights turn on. The computer also powers on, except no output at all. After a few seconds of being on without output, the PSU fan(only the PSU fan) maxes out and spins loudly. Can someone PLS HELP ME!?!

TLDR: Overloaded an old power supply and now the pc wont turn on unless you unplug it, wait a few minutes, and plug it back in. then it turns on, but no display output. after a few seconds of being on without any output, PSU fan maxes out. then i just pull the pug and it turns off. PLS HELP!?

Power consumption = 150 watts.

Recommended PSU = 500 watts.

Good possibility that the GPU power consumption could exceed 150 watts. Power consumption is often established under ideal circumstances.

Before trying any other PSU I recommend that you tally up the power requirements for all of the PC's components and add 25% more for safety and growth.

Hopefully a 550 watt PSU will be sufficient but that is not much beyond the GPU's recommended PSU wattage.

New GPU - make and model?

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information,

Overall, very likely that the new GPU demanded more power from the 260W PSU than the PSU was capable of providing.

PSU failed trying.
thats what i thought. GPU is MSI Radeon RX 480 GAMING X 8GB

sounds like the bios went a little nuts ,,,,, Reset the bios by pulling the cmos battery out leave it out for about 10 to 30 seconds giving it time to forget its settings,,,, then put the battery back in , after that ,,,, like others are suggesting ,,, try another power supply you might've cooked that psu with that much power draw given HP power supply quality it wouldn't surprise me.

my thinking is its the combination ,,,, since the power supply went out it may have sent a weird power ripple to the motherboard the bios freaked out and went a little wonky,,,,
