I want to replace our modem/router with a router. Our internet is 75 Mbps fiber. The fiber cable goes straight to our condominium unit, into our modem/router and our modem/router is a GPON(?) router, i think is what its called (Huawei HG8245Q2). I want to replace it with something better. My main obstacle right now is if I will have to buy another GPON routers, because there arent a lot of GPON router.

Am i just stuck with GPON routers? or are there other more convenient solutions

Look at the chances. Us two sobs are stuck in the same boat. You and I have what is called a GPON HGU device. Think of it as an all in one box.

Problem is very few manufacturers actually make these.

You most likely can't change your GPON HGU device...
It depends what you think is wrong with the router.

GPON has a number of variations and different optical interfaces so it is not that simple to get a device. In most cases the ISP will not allow it. What is to prevent someone from splicing into the fiber or finding a unused connection and using their own device. Even if the ISP allows it they would somehow have to allow it on their network.

In most cases you can change the device to only act as a modem. How exactly you do this is hard to say because many of the ISP have locked out the screens even on devices that have a bridge option. This is a question for the ISP.

Once you get it to function only as a modem you can use any router.

BUT it again comes back to what does not work. If it is just wifi you can put a AP or a router acting as a AP in front of the ISP router.

You most likely can't change your GPON HGU device just like me. But that doesn't mean you can't disable it's routing functionality and use a third party router instead.

Naturally confirm this with your ISPs customer care first.
