help instaling windows 7

right now i have some old 3gb hard disk as boot drive,for windows xp,but i have another hdd inside pc,and when i run setup,it copies temp files,and then when option about updates come up it shows error..im guessing it must be installed on boot partition? well,its not possible,can i somehow change that? can i just copy win xp files on other hdd from that 3gb one,and boot from that second hdd??
