HELP! Installing Graphics Card OVER Integrated Graphics! What do I do!

Hey guys,

I have a brand new i5 6600K in an ASUS Z170A motherboard, I have been using the integrated graphics due to NO graphics card, the integrated graphics is either on my CPU (i5 6600K) or my motherboard, I'm not sure which one it's on.
I built this last week. I have been waiting for my graphics card to come in the mail, it will arrive today.

What do I do to install an ASUS GTX 1060 over my existing integrated graphics? Do i disable the integrated graphics in my BIOS?

I googled it and some people said they had to disable the integrated GFX in the device manager, others said i had to go to my BIOS and disable it there.

can SOMEBODY give me a STEP-by-STEP walk through on how to do this. I truly appreciate your help guys. I wouldn't have been able to do my first PC build without Toms Hardware forums!

You shouldn't have to fiddle with any of the settings in the BIOS. It should just be a matter of pushing your card into the motherboard slot, plugging in any 6-pin or 8-pin power connections it may have , plugging the monitor into the back of the card, firing up windows and installing the latest drivers.

OK, thanks. I will try that. So, I'm guessing the integrated graphics automatically disable itself when a graphics card in the PCI slot is recognized.

Since this is the first graphics card ever to be going into this motherboard, I should't have to run a "driver uninstaller" like Wagnard Tools, right?

That's right, the integrated graphics should be able to detect that there's a discrete video card taking over.

If you only have the intel graphics drivers at the moment, you will just need to install your AMD/Nvidia driver, you don't need to uninstall anything.

make sure you plug the monitor into the new gpu before restarting the computer

It depends on your motherboard. Try the following:

1- go to your device manager and see if the new gpu is displayed there
2- go into your bios and in the graphic adapters menu check what setting is thete. It is usually on automatic, if so change it to the pcie
3- if your motherboard doesnt support the feature described above just go tp your device manager once more and search for the igpu and disable it, then just restart your computer (I had to do this last step on my pc until I updated my bios and discovered the function described on step 2).

this is going into as brand new computer the board is ASUS z170a, the gpu is a ASUS gtx 1060 strix OC. I hjavent updated my BIOS yet because everything is working great. Since they are both ASUS products that came out at the same time everything should work just fine.

I'll take those steps into consideration though if something goes wrong. I have a feeling I will have to tell the BIOS to look in the PCI area of the board to discover the graphics card.

Yes it worked great. ASUS gtx 1060 strix= Installed and working well. I simply just plugged the thing in and my computer recognized tit, downlaoded the recent drivers. This 1060 strix is very nice...for a 1060 that it

First off, he didn't list a "problem" he had a basic question about directions.

Second, the thing to do is to start a new thread, with a detailed description of your problem and a full list of your specs, not randomly resurrect a thread from more than five years ago.
