So I'm buying a 850 Evo and I wanna add it to my computer. I wanna keep everything but my games and OS on my HDD, and move the games and OS to the SSD. What's the easiest way to do this?

Solution

For a successful clone operation, you need to get the actual used space to below 450GB.
Uninstall some games, move some video files elsewhere...whatever.
Assuming you have a reasonably good internet connection, you can redownload those games again, installing on a different drive.

Assuming we get the size thing right, steps for a successful clone operation:
-----------------------------
Verify the actual used space on the current drive is significantly below the size of the new SSD
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except...

You can't split it up like that...."move the games and OS to the SSD".
All the other applications and utilities will go as well.

How much total space is consumed on your current drive?

There are programs that only copy certain programs over. And I'm at about 600GB

Paragon Migrate is one, EaseUS todo, and I think you can with AOMEI backupper as well.

Interesting.
From the EasusToDo guide, it says nothing about selectively choosing applications.
http://www.todo-backup.com/products/features/disk-clone-guide.htm
----------------------------------
AOMEI backupper only says:
"AOMEI Backupper will check out whether the space on destination disk is sufficient or not before starting to clone hard drive to SSD. If not, you can slim your HDD by removing data to another storage device or use system clone to only migrate your operating system (OS) to the SSD instead."
http://www.backup-utility.com/clone/clone-hard-drive-to-ssd-4348.html

Nothing about selectively choosing applications.
-----------------------------------
Paragon Migrate talks about:
"Advanced data exclusion capabilities
Allows to exclude data during the setup in order to fit in to the destination disk."
https://www.paragon-software.com/home/migrate-OS-to-SSD-5/features.html

Which is leaving off files like music, video, docs....
Not selective applications.

Samsung Migrate does that as well.

-------------------------------------
Unless of course you have some other documentation from those, or any other sources, that point to selectively choosing applications to go with the migration.
A link and/or screenshot would help.

If we can find something that actually does that, the community would be VERY grateful.

I've never seen an application that would allow this program, and not that program.
And then...what would happen to the programs left behind? The Registry would be all hosed up.

I just saw a pc world article about Paragon and Lifehacker was talking about Ease and AOMEI in their article about switching to an SSD

So you've never acually tried it, nor seen it actually work, or have any text or documentation saying they can do that?
OK....

Yeah I guess an article saying that it can do that isn't technically text and documentation.

A link to this PC World article, please?

All of those applications are free or free trial.
I invite you to install one, start the process, and show us the screen where it allows you to selectively choose which applications to clone over.

I'm prepared to be amazed.

www.pcworld.com/article/2098426/move-from-a-hard-drive-to-an-ssd.html

"If the SSD didn't come with bundled software, or if it wasn't any good, I suggest you shell out an extra $20 for Paragon Migrate OS to SSD. Yes, that's a lot of money for a program you'll only use once, but it's worth it. Migrate allows you to select which files and folders will and will not be copied to the new drive."

Have to agree with USAFRet on Migration/Cloning. I've used Todo and Ez-gig IV and will you may omit data, I've not seen one that will allow you to omit applications.

This is normally not a problem. Simply in-install application you wish to omit before cloning. NOTE: when you uninstall selected programs reboot and run a registry cleaning program (ie CCleaner). LOL only works if you have re-install for programs and KEYs if required, to re-install. Some programs/applications will NOT allow installation to other than C-Drive. You can move some windows directories to a 2nd drive (ie My documents, Videos and Photos).

" files and folders" are not applications.
It will, as I noted above, allow you to leave off data files. Doc/Music/Video...
Applications are a whole different thing.

Cool now that we got that out of the way, back to the whole original point. Getting a new SSD, wanna use it for OS and games, and the HDD for everything else.

I was just about to say the same thing...:)

1. What size is the new SSD?
2. How much total space is consumed on the current HDD?
3. What, exactly, does that consumed space consist of?
4. Do you have (or can borrow) another drive with a bunch of free space on it?

1. 500GB
2. A little over 650GB
3. About 400GB of it is games. The rest is pictures videos etc...
4. I do not.

Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration, if a Samsung SSD)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
Delete the original boot partitions, here:

Solution

So when you say all drives, I only have one HDD.
And after this is finished i'd have to manually delete the extra fluff from my SSD after, correct?

That was written in a generic manner, to include systems with more than one drive.
Since you only have the one, proceed on.

Ideally, you remove the extra fluff before the clone operation.
But yes....you can move stuff off the SSD over to the HDD after this operation.

For how to manage space between the two drives, this:

Cool thanks.
