HELP! Intel X25-M SMART STATUS BAD BACKUP AND REPLACE

My Intel X25-M SSD is giving a "SMART STATUS BAD BACKUP AND REPLACE" message on start up. Do I need to worry? Windows 7 still runs great. No difference in start up time, no freezing, no blue screen or any weird behavior. Drive is cool to the touch. Do I need to be concerned? As always, stuff is backed up. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, you need to worry. Drive may run fine for some time, but you have a much larger chance of it failing than normal. And don't ask exactly what the chances are it will fail, it's from 0-100% chance. If you have backups and the drive is no longe under warranty, you can keep using it as it is, just with the thought that any day it can stop working.

Think of it this way: AFTER the system tells you the HDD HAS failed and you cannot use the computer, what will you do? You think data recovery is easy?

The purpose of such warnings is to give you time to move everything to a new reliable HDD while the old one is still limping along but fully able to let you read its data. AFTER the failure, you can't do that.

It has been running great for the last 3 months. The CrystalDiskMark performance is normal and the CrystalDiskInfo shows bad for something. It is red. I will start the system and see what for and report back.

Stuff is automatically backed up to a WD 320gb HDD.

You have exactly two options. Replace the drive now so you are doing it on your terms which may include a simple clone of the drive to another one, or wait and if it fails replace it then, which probably means no option to run a disk image.

If the drive is 3 months old, I'd replace it now while it's still in warranty.

I had the drive for a couple years. It is out of warranty. How much longer do you think it has? There is nothing I can do to help it. Is there?

No. The Intel X25-M is a 1st Generation SSD. It is the 1st model of Consumer-grade SSDs and was released for sale in 2008. It is a SATA 2 (3Gb/s) SSD with no TRIM support.

It's pretty good that the SSD was able to function all of this time before finally giving SMART errors.

I agree with hang-the-9, continue to use the drive until it dies, or buy a current generation SATA 3 (6Gb/s) SSD and use the X25-M as a storage/data drive until it dies.

Dereck47 is correct. You have a very old first generation solid state drive. I still remember some of the discussions in this forum.

The others are correct. It is time to replace the ssd. What is the brand and model number of your motherboard? We'll have to check and see if it can properly support a modern 3rd generation ssd.

It has TRIM. No errors after format. Go figure. Thanks for the help
