Help me build an oddball character

I have a soft spot for rags to riches characters. I also have a soft
spot for...erm...*unusual* character concepts.

Here's the thing. I was looking through the 3.5 DMG and was instantly
intrigued by the Horizon Walker - something about it interests me, and
it seems like a role I want to experience at least once. I'm also
intrigued by the Book of Exalted Deeds my DM recently picked up,
though that isn't necessary for my concept.

Here's the idea. I start off as a Human Expert (there's that rags to
riches bit) - a mapmaker, as a matter of fact, with Knowledge:
Geography as one of my core skills. I pick up Endurance as one of my
first feats and put my best scores into CON and INT, but I save a 13
for STR. At 3rd level I take Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Dwarven Waraxe
- that's my penchant for the unusual again, and DWaraxes look so damn
cool besides. I can use my 6th and 9th feats to meet prereqs for the
Sword of Riteousness from Exalted if I decide that's what I want, but
that's not set in stone yet. After 6 levels of Expert (to milk the
best BAB and saves out of the Expert class that I can) I go into
Horizon Walker.

So: what would you suggest for my other first level feat? Other
advice? I realize this is probably so into left field it's hard to
offer conventional tactics. I also realize I'll be getting a lot of
comments about how dumb an idea this is...those are welcome too. Just
give me some feedback here.

You know, this was making me think: what do you folks think about using
"Smart Hero" from D20 Modern as a PC-Grade Expert in D&D? They get a Talent
every odd level, a Bonus Feat every even level, poor BAB, a medium Will save
(the others are poor - to match D&D I would change it to a good save), 8
skill points per level, and D6 hit points.

I think it would be doable given a little work with converting the class skills
to D&D. It could be a viable class as generic as the Fighter.

When people make a list of the 'primary' classes, with the idea of selecting the
main combat class, specialist class, divine caster class, and arcane caster
class, they usually pick the Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, and Wizard.

But the Rogue isn't all that generic; it's got sneak attacks and special dodging
and mental defenses and all that. The Rogue is on the level of Barbarian,
Ranger, or Bard -- it's not a 'primary' class, but a variant class.

I don't think the standard rules /has/ a primary thieving class for PC's, unless
you include the Expert NPC class. But a D&Dized Smart Hero could fill the gap.

Here's my attempt at a generic specialist PC class. I have omitted the Talents
on purpose; I wanted to make the GTPCC as generic as the Fighter, Cleric, and
Wizard. I have synthesized the class from the Smart, Dedicated, and Charismatic
Hero classes.

Knave (for lack of a better name)

Hit Die: d6

Class Skills
The Knave's class skills are Bluff (Cha), Craft (Int), Decipher Script (Int),
Diplomacy (Cha), Disguise (Cha), Disable Device (Int), Forgery (Int), Gather
Information (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Knowledge
(all skills taken individually) (Int), Listen (Wis), Perform (Cha), Profession
(Wis), Search (Int), Sense Motive (Wis), and Speak Language, Spot (Wis), and
Survival (Wis).
Skill Points at 1st Level: (8 + Int modifier) X 4.
Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 8 + Int modifier.

Class Features
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: The Knave is proficient with all simple weapons.
They are not proficient with any type of armor or shield.

LVL BAB FT RF WL SPECIAL
1st +0 +0 +0 +2 bonus feat
2nd +1 +0 +0 +3 bonus feat
3rd +2 +1 +1 +3
4th +3 +1 +1 +4 bonus feat
5th +3 +1 +1 +4
6th +4 +2 +2 +5 bonus feat
7th +5 +2 +2 +5
8th +6/+1 +2 +2 +6 bonus feat
9th +6/+1 +3 +3 +6
10th +7/+2 +3 +3 +7 bonus feat
11th +8/+3 +3 +3 +7
12th +9/+4 +4 +4 +8 bonus feat
13th +9/+4 +4 +4 +8
14th +10/+5 +4 +4 +9 bonus feat
15th +11/+6 +5 +5 +9
16th +12/+7 +5 +5 +10 bonus feat
17th +12/+7 +5 +5 +10
18th +13/+8 +6 +6 +11 bonus feat
19th +14/+9 +6 +6 +11
20th +15/+10 +6 +6 +12 bonus feat

At 1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, and 20th level, the Knave
gains a bonus feat. This feat must be selected from the following list (the
Knave must meet any prerequisites): Alertness, Blind-Fight, Combat Expertise,
Deceitful, Dodge, Far Shot, Improved Disarm, Investigator, Improved Trip, Iron
Will, Light Armor Proficiency, Lightning Reflexes, Negotiator, Persuasive, Point
Blank Shot, Self-Sufficient, Skill Focus, Track, Weapon Focus.

Instead of adding in the talents from the Smart, Dedicated, and Charismatic Hero
classes directly as class abilities, the DM could make them available as feats
which the Knave could gain as bonus feats.

It's the ideal solution for the adventuring non-rogue skills-emphasizing

The cleric isn't generic either. It's got special undead-handling and
healing abilities, and it's tied to a specific spellcasting method. Nor
is the wizard generic. It's got a familiar and another specific
spellcasting method. Only the fighter is truly "generic," and only in
the realm of combat ability.

Furthermore, the rogue models the whole range of pulp heroes well. You
can't say the same thing for the cleric, which is an uneasy fit for just
about any archetypal fantasy hero. You want to complain about
non-generic classes, look to the cleric.

I guess we are drawing the boundary between "generic" and "non-generic" at
different points, then. I will say, however, that an "ideal" generic cleric,
wizard, and rogue would look basically like an adjusted fighter with nothing but
bonus feats and spellcasting ability (if any), along with a selection of class
skills, skill points, good saves, appropriate base attack bonus, and granted
weapon & armor feats. You might think differently, and that's all right, but I
would put spellcasting in the "generic" category ... enough classes have some
kind of spellcasting ability that it's not special like evasion or summon
familiar (if spells are non-generic, then so would simple & martial weapon
prof., light & medium & heavy armor prof., etc.)

That's right, probably because you're a short-sighted idiot.

The cleric looks nothing like that, so why do you think it's generic?

I disagree. However, even if I granted that, clerics get a lot more than
just spellcasting: armor, turning, spontaneous healing, and granted
powers.

Do you have anything to say that isn't nigh-unbelievably stupid?

I'm sorry, but how does a difference in taste in class design translate to that
..... ? hm.

I would be interested in seeing where I could be quoted as saying that the
Cleric was generic. Notice I used the word "ideally">

Armor I would put as a generic ability. Turning no, spontaneous casting no, and
granted domain powers no. These all disqualify the cleric as "generic", though
they are the closest thing to a generic divine casting class that D&D has right
now, and so that is what most people put as the canonical generic divine caster.

Contrast that with the rogue's allegedly "non-generic" class features.
Dirty fighting and evasive abilities are quite common among pulp heroes.
They actually support the usual archetypes. Despite that, I see many
complaints about the rogue being non-generic, and relatively few about
the cleric. It looks like you're parroting flawed "common wisdom"
without actually thinking about it. Which is nothing new for you.

Did someone break into your car again?

A little more seriously, Matthias manages to stay off my shitlist by
occasionally learning from his errors, which at least shows more
intellectual honesty than the three stooges currently inhabiting my
killfile; but you've been on him like he was hitting on your sister.
Personally I'd counsel saving it for the likes of Marshall and Dirk.
