Help me choose a video card. Pro vs gamer GPU under $800

Aug 15, 2011

I'm currently building a new system. I intend on doing video editing, and 2D/2D modeling and simulation. I will probably do little, if any gaming but who knows.

My tentative setup is...

Intel Core i7-2600K cpu
GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD7-B3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 motherboard
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133

(I will take improvement suggestions on this)

Here are the slot specs:

2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1, PCIEX16_2)
2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x8 (PCIEX8_1, PCIEX8_2)
* The PCIEX8_1 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 slot and the PCIEX8_2 slot with PCIEX16_2. The PCIEX16_1/PCIEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode when the PCIEX8_1/PCIEX8_2 is populated.
1 x PCI Express x1 slot
(All PCI Express slots conform to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
2 x PCI slots

The board also has Support for 2-Way/3-Way ATI CrossFireX/NVIDIA SLI technology.

What video cards do you guys recommend under $800?

I'm not clear on the differences between the pro cards and gaming cards.

Your PC specifications are good for your needs. I don't expect anyone here who will prompt you to get the 2500k over the i7 2600k.

As per my knowledge, main difference between pro cards and gaming cards is that drivers of the gaming cards are tweaked to get the maximum performance in gaming (Direct3D) and vice-versa for pro cards.

So if you are in gaming, the gtx 590 is fine, the gtx 590 too can handle 2d/3d modelling, video editing good, so as per me the GTX 590 should do the job:

Don't buy it immediately, do some more research over the web and wait for couple of more replies.

gtx 590 was a fail imo i have 2 of them and i will take 1 gtx 580 over the 590 any day, i hate the issues it has and how bad the scaling is in sli
