Hello, i'm having trouble choosing what CPU to upgrade to on a low budget.
I haven't really had trouble running most games on my Phenom II B45 its served me extremely well for what it is..

But recently i'm starting to struggle on the newer games like BF4, Assassins creed, Total war Rome II and the like and im wondering if upgrading the CPU to a FX-6300 would do the trick?

The rest of my computer is starting to age aswell but i cant afford to upgrade everything just yet but im wondering if upgrading my dated CPU would allow me to play games max settings? i suffer with huge fps drops in BF4, Huge fps drops in battles when zoomed in on Rome 2 ad that leads me to think its cpu related..

I have 4GB Kingston HyperX ddr3, GTX 560 Ti OC, and i'm running windows 8.1

Any advice would be welcome..

I cant afford to upgrade my GPU as i only got it a Little over one year ago and i never had trouble maxing games with it i can max gpu demanding games like batman arkham origins at max settings with my current setup, but CPU demanding games i struggle with hugely.

the 560ti is still quite capable if you dont go crazy with settings on really new games, but you would benefit from a better cpu.

fx 6300 is a decent upgrade and is much less power hungry\
improved by windows 8 ( windows 7 doesnt work well with fx)

also another 4gb same ram would help as windows 8 takes 2gb of ram leaving you only 2gb to play with games which is probly why your taking a hit hard as well

560 ti is getting old but not hugely it holds its own in some games but is easily beaten by 7870 amd usually by 10 frames or more depending on the game

r9 270x does a bit better but is a rebranded model of a 7870 with higher memory and clock speed bumping up the frames by 5-7 more

so yes upgrading to fx 6300 is worth it if board supports it

Ordered a 6300 for less than 70 quid, due to arrive later on today, ill tell you how much of a FPS improvement i get, hoping its a decent upgrade, as the Phenom II b45 is very old and isn't a true quad core.

I'll probably end up getting a 7870 in a few months as well, it's within my budget. and I can't decide if getting another 4gb would be worth it,loads of people have told me that 4gb is fine others say it's not

btw what board is your motherboard ? did you check with compatibility.

and technically the fx 6300 isnt a true 6 core more like a tri core on steroids.

as for adding more ram i would add more as like i said before

your os 8.1 reserves 2gb of ram for the os and 2gb ram for gaming which isnt enough if you have 2 free slots get 2x2 gb of same speed of ram and voltage and latency very important

most games dont use more then 2gb to 4gb depends how demanding they are and 7870 is a good chip and is very overclockable

Well, I got my CPU this morning and when I first tried it at first I wasn't too impressed with the results, however a friend of mine offered to sell me 2GB of ram and a zalman CNPS10X Extreme CPU fan cooler, which will allow me to easily OC it to 4.5ghz, but I need to get some thermal paste before install the cooler and overclock it. but upon installing the extra 2gb of ram taking me to 6gb it has made a noticeable difference to performance, I can actually run BF4 all ultra settings with my Card and along with the CPU and RAM upgrade, has removed all of the stuttering problems I had also, very pleased about it, it's given my computer a new lease of life again 😀

you can get some mx4 paste that would work wonders i use it in consoles and all my builds. i do find it does need time to settle like a week as i noticed 10c drop then another 4 c drop

and its faily cheap depending were you live i know in uk its cheap on amazon usa usually newegg

glad to see your processor is doing you proud

the cooler I got was suppost to have some thermal paste with it but its a used one and he forgot to put it in the box 😛, hes coming around my house tomorrow with the thermal paste, then i'll be able to see how far i can OC it, but i heard its a solid OCer and i'm very pleased with it even at stock speeds, i've gained a solid 20 fps in all games

you should also find it uses much less energy on your electric bill lol even at occed settings then the phenom.

average wattage used 77w while not occed
average used on a phenom 150w while not occed
