hi all i had a GTX 1060 6GB and it died last month I am hoping to buy a new GPU in the coming weeks and I am a bit confused about which one to go please Help me Choose RTX 3060 12 GB or RTX 4060 8 GB?

will the 8GB in 4060 will be an issue in the future? if I go with the 3060 12 GB will it be enough for the next 4 years? i play most of the games in Max setting possible in 1080p so I like to choose a card where I can play it like that for the next few years at least

the price difference between 2 cards is less than 20 USD in my country

My specs
intel core i5 10400
32GB DDR 4 RAM
FSP AURUM S 600W

Solution
hi sorry for bothering you again I have this PSU

FSP Group AURUM S 600W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Active PFC Power Supply

but on the internet, it says I need a minimum 650W PSU for Radeon RX 6700 XT MECH 12GB will it be an issue with my 600W PSU if I go for a Radeon RX 6700 XT MECH 12GB?
You're good for being concerned about that. The strange thing is, TechPowerUp, who bases their recommendations on power consumption observed during review tests, recommends a 550W PSU and that's what I was basing my recommendation on. Here's the entry:
TechPowerUp GPU Database: MSi Radeon RX 6700 XT MECH 2X OC 12GB - Recommended PSU

You can click on the long link or the "550W PSU"...

Well, having more VRAM is always better, but the 4060 is definitely faster than the 3060. Will 12GB be enough for the next 4 years ? That's a tricky and difficult 'subjective' question to answer.

Because a lot of variables are involved in this. What type of games you are usually playing, whether that AAA game is a VRAM resource hog (not all game engines behave the same), will you game on Full HD, 2K or even 4K resolution in future ? etc., among other factors.

We can't say "this amount of XYZ GB" VRAM is going to be future-proof. But given the current state of PC games, due to bad coding and optimization and memory leaks, expect a lot of AAA games to be VRAM-hungry in future as well.

But by how much amount ? That would really depend on that particular Game's Engine/code.

thank you all for your time and your replies I want to know is anyone has played any VRAM hungry game that require more than 8GB in 1080p resolution on very ultra settings on a RTX 4060? how well it performed (NO DLSS or IMAGE SCALING enabled ) will be great if anyone can tell their experience

Ultimately though, neither of them is a good choice because of the drawbacks that they each have.

I actually agree with you on this one. If the OP has only those two options, and he/she only prefers Nvidia, then the 4060 would be a better choice at least if we take performance into consideration.

But the 'paltry' 128-bit memory bus scares me in 2023. Nvidia has increased the L2 cache, but the card will still have bandwidth issues in some games. Not to mention on a higher screen resolution, and the 8GB VRAM limitation.

For light and older games the 4060 is still a good choice for 1080p gaming on a budget. But I would rather prefer getting the AMD RX 6700 XT instead if given an option, or even the RX 6800, if one can afford. There are even more better options.

The price/performance ratio of the 4060 is bad if we compare the specs and the price of the card to previous gen xx60-class SKUs. I was just answering OP's question.

Honestly neither of these cards is good enough for maximum settings at 1080p. The 3060 isn't fast enough and the 4060 will run into VRAM issues, especially with high res textures and ray tracing. The number of titles this happens in isn't very high right now, but is likely to get worse.

The decision you have to make is spend more money to get something that can really do maximum settings or turn down settings when you need to. Personally speaking I'd go with the latter and pick the 4060 if AMD is off the table.

thanks a lot to all of you for the great explanations on the cards and i am from Sri Lanka the price of

MSI GEFORCE RTX™ 3060 GAMING X 12 GB

is like 410 USD

GIGABYTE GEFORCE RTX 4060 GAMING OC 8 GB

is like 439 USD

i will be very happy if someone shares their experience on running a VRAM hungry game that requires more than 8GB in 1080p resolution on very ultra settings on a RTX 4060 (every graphics quality and details variable was set to its maximum values , ray tracing enabled, and the frame resolution was set to 1080p, with no upscaling activated.) just want to know how well it runs

Eg Games like The Last of Us Part 1,Resident Evil 4,Hogwarts Legacy

thanks again for all of you guys support and feedback

This is probably the best you're going to do as I doubt most folks around here are going to run settings that aren't playable:

Yeah, that's WAY too expensive for those cards.

I found the card that most (if not all) of us probably immediately thought of for your purposes. It's available at two vendors in Sri Lanka for $41USD less than the RTX 3060 and $70USD less than the RTX 4060:
MSi Radeon RX 6700 XT MECH 12GB - රු 122,000 ($369USD) - at MSK Computers
MSi Radeon RX 6700 XT MECH 12GB - රු 122,000 ($369USD) - at Games Street

TechPowerUp ranks the RX 6700 XT as 33% faster than the RTX 3060 and 12% faster than the RTX 4060. It also has 50% more VRAM (12GB instead of 8GB) despite being less expensive than both of the cards that you're looking at.

This is why I was hesitant to recommend either of those GeForce cards.

I hope that this helps you out.

thanks for your reply i like to know about Games like The Last of Us Part 1, Resident Evil 4, Hogwarts Legacy

i watched a video of Hogwarts Legacy on RTX 4060 with all set to high with high raytracing the VRAM is like 8.4GB it takes for 1080P but the game runs smoothly
The Last of Us Part and Hogwarts Legacy are both shown side by side in the first video I linked to.

The second video I linked shows all 3 of the games you mentioned.

The best way to judge the cards (outside of actually playing the games on both cards) is to view those videos I mentioned where the cards are shown side by side and make your own decision.
