I've narrowed it down to these, from reading reviews and the features and price range I would like.

Foxconn 9657AA-8KS2H............... ~ $100
Biostar TForce 965PT................... ~ $105
Gigabyte GA-965P-S3.................. ~ $110
Intel BOXDP965LTCK................... ~ $115
Asus P5B.................................... ~ $130
Abit AB9..................................... ~ $130

I don't really need 6 SATA connectors, dual gigabit ethernet or FireWire.

I would like a good stable board with overclocking features suitable for a novice (I intend to learn, but I don't want to destroy the board or other components trying)

If there's one I haven't listed there that might suit me please let me know!

Thanks :)

out of your list i'd go with either
GA-965P-S3
or
Asus P5B

as you can see from my sig i own p5b and what clock i've achieved, i can go higher but i want to keep my temps down and there's really no point into pushing 8*400 oc.

Foxconn & Intel won't be great overclockers.
The abit has a very good feature set & very good performance clock for clock (especially over 400fsb where the other 965s switch to the 1333 strap) but won't hit as high an fsb as the Asus or Gigabyte because it doesn't switch straps.

Remember that your overclock will only be as good as the weakest link be it CPU, mobo, coooling, RAM or PSU.

I would say get the AB9, I own one and I raised the fsb at 400 mhz fsb without increasing any voltages, resulting in a 50% overclock for my cpu with default voltages. a friend which bought Asus P5B and the same processor as mine couldn't do 400 mhz fsb without changing voltages. It's your choice after all.

Go for Asus or Gigabyte because they offer more expansion slots, better bios and driver support with often updates and quality.
