Hey guys.....I was thinking of upgrading my PC and have made a list of the components ...core i5 6600k , Asus Z170 Pro Gaming, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, but will still be using my old graphics card R7 260X 2GB OC EDITION...(at least for next 2-3 years.)(tight budget) ....
Yesterday I met one of my friends and he advised me to buy a PS4 instead cause it will cost a bit lesser.... But he's not a tech expert....

And hence I wanna ask you guys which platform is better compared to my $500-600 PC (INR 40000)

The PS4 costs 450$ or INR 30000

What do your friends play? I value playing with my friends more than anything.

Honestly, who can afford a top of the line cpu and motherboard but cant get a new gpu? You should spend less and get an i3 and H series chipset. that would get you some money to put toward a better gpu. A used high end card can be had for the money you are going to save.

The 260x is not a bad card by any means, but why bother spending $250ish for a cpu and over $100 for a motherboard but neglect getting a better gpu? Makes no sense.

You need to list your entire PC part list so we know what you have now. At $450 you should easily be able to find cheaper computer parts unless prices are hugely inflated where you live. PS4 games are more expensive and it cost money to go online so the PC is cheaper in the long run as well.

I have both. I have a high end PC for 1440p monitor PC gaming, and a PS4 for playing with friends online who do not have PCs. I also have several of the same games between platforms. Like someone else above said, who do you have more friends playing? PC or the PS4? If you have a budget, the PS4 is really the better value than a comparable $400(US) PC. Especially considering most games these days are coded for consoles then ported back for PC. They are optimized to run better on the PS4.

If I had to choose one at that price level, it would be the PS4 hands down. But there's a catch: you have to pay a fee to game online through PlayStation Network (PlayStation Plus).

1) A lot of games are only 30FPS for console, thus feel pretty sluggish (and may drop below 20FPS at times).

2) Tweaking on PC is both a pro and a con.

3) PC allows you to do other things including some multitasking you can't easily do on console (or at all).

4) BUDGET?
*I doubt your budget is quite right though. Ignoring the BluRay reader the PS4 has a controller and doesn't require a copy of Windows so that's a bit of a difference you may not have included.

5) FUTURE:
The i5-6600K is very solid solution for many years, so dropping in a better GPU in a few years will give you a much better system. Estimates for next-gen consoles are 2020.

6) COST PART 2:
A lot of games are CHEAPER on the PC

7) PC specific and high-res support (i.e. CIV5 at 2560x1440/4K)

8) Asynchronous monitors (due to budget this is a future issue, however consoles do not support asynchronous monitors.)
*Gaming at 30FPS on console (adaptive vsync essentially) vs gaming at average 80FPS with asynchronous mode support is a huge, huge difference.

Example upgrade path:
a) New system now (i5-6600K, 16GB..)
b) New GPU in 2018 (similar to GTX980Ti now?)
c) Asynchronous monitor in 2018->2020 (NVidia/AMD support as applicable)

9) STEAM LINK:
You can buy a $50USD Steam Link to remotely play your PC games on an HDTV (use an ETHERNET connection for optimal play).

Cheers.

Well I've already pushed my budget to its limits and for me my choice(PC or PS) ( well i am a PC fan) has got to be able to run games for a minimum of 7-8 years from now.. I guess the PS4 will be outdated by then right???

Also how long do you think an i5 6500 paired with a H170 mobo last?? I'll upgrade the GPU in about 2 years or so

Well I play games like the GTA series, AC,hitman, NFS and Max Payne ...looking forward to COD,Battlefield,Far Cry and The Division....well I couldn't play the latter ones in my old PC (i3 540) ..what I wanna say is that I don't play games like witcher and such....so how long can my rig run games

A reply to thorr220
I live in Bangalore, India and yeah prices are very high here , the companies say that there are huge taxes in India and hence the price

Most of your rig's ability to play games is going to depend on your GPU. So long as you put some decent money down on a GPU your rig will be fine for a long time.
