I'm doing a mojor upgrade right now with the intention of eventually being VR compatible. I just bought a 250gig 850 EVO and will be reusing my R9 270X for now. After I buy one of the packages below I'm going to use my left over components to build a comp and sell to help me buy either a 970 or 980 gfx.

Which of these packages would you buy and why?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I'd pick the Skylake package for two reasons: It's a newer chipset, which means there will be developed new CPU's for said chipset for longer, which means it's more future-proof, and because it has 16GB RAM instead of 8GB. Although the i7-4790K has ~20-25% better performance, the Skylake system will stay up to date for longer. Besides, I'd get a water-cooler for the CPU and OC it anyways :)

It depends on how you would be using the computer. If you are a gamer and plan to mostly just game on the computer than the i5 is the better option. If you plan to record gameplay or livestream as well as do rendering and other more demanding tasks than the i7 is still an i7 and will ultimately perform these tasks better than the i5.

Skylake is the obvious choice here, the CPU is new and future-proof(There will be new CPUs for that socket), it has DDR4, maybe it performs a bit worse than the i7, but I'd still take it because you can upgrade anytime in the future when you have the money.
So if you don't do CPU intensive tasks like rendering, I'd get the i5 skylake.

Exactly. It's newer technology and hardware. Ideally that means it'll be more current for longer; you'll be able to upgrade it easier for further out. It's also in a good sweet spot for performance to price and it's unlocked so you can easily overclock it.

The system will be used almost exclusively for gaming. I don't do any streaming or video editing. Like I said in the original post, I do want to use it for VR gaming once the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive have been out for 8-12 months. Will the skylake I5 be sufficient for this purpose? I know I'm going to have to sink $400+ into a new GFX card before I can support VR. I don't want to have to upgrade my CPU as well.

Absolutely

After some research, I've decided that I def want to go with the skylake. Its seems better to buy a mid teir current chipset rather than the top teir of a chipset that won't be produced anymore.

The one BIG question that remains; is there any reason to believe there will be a price drop in the near future?

Look in your inbox. PM'd you about a trade.

Responded.

Both DDR3 and DDR4 RAM will most likely drop considerably in price, but the only price drops for both motherboard and CPU in the near future will be near meaningless, as these kinds of electronics pretty much stay the same from launch 'till End of Life.
