Hi,

For some time my HP Pavilion m6 laptop (i5, 8GB memory, win7) is really slow on boot up, it just takes time to load and hard drive light is constantly lit for over 5 minutes and during that time its unusable. After that loading period hard drive light does not stay lit and opening applications seems ok to me.

I have Kaspersky internet security 2015, I ran malware-bytes and used CCleaner. No infections found.
Did userbenchmark.com test and this is what it showed for hard drive http://prntscr.com/78bpc4
Can anyone suggest what to try to get to the bottom of this and figure out if hard driveis dying and I need new SSD or its something else.

Thanks for your time in advance!

I doubt that your hard drive has any problems. If you're having a slow boot and it takes a long time for you to be able to do anything... that mostly means you have TOO MANY programs starting up on boot. Stuff like Spotify, Skype, Yahoo Messenger, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Roxio, Printer software... all try to preload and that's what makes your computer really slow on startup.

You need to install a good 3rd Party Startup Manager... like Autoruns and UNCHECK stuff you don't need starting up automatically. Oh, and don't bother with MSConfig... that only shows like a tiny handful of your startup programs... pretty useless.

Also try going into the settings of some of your programs and UNCHECKING to option to startup with Windows.

Forgot to include that but I already did using MSConfig and left everything on minimum. Never heard for Autoruns but will give it a try.

Running defrag never crossed my mind, I will leave it over night. Thanks!

Ok, thanks, I will do that.
Still doing defrag, taking long time http://i.imgur.com/nQm2T5s.jpg , could be that before while I had Norton installed it never removed that setting and windows was never able to defrag it.
I did not pay attention what it said for C: but if other disks shows were defragmented last year there's a good chance C: had same date.

It definetly sounds like it is the startup programs that seems to be the problem. I personal don't use norton as the anti virus and just use windows defender with anti malware bytes. Both together should be enough to stop most common viruses.

Second make sure that all programs that you have are ones that you use and are neccessary. Look both at the c and d drive as when you unstall a program, some of the files from the program may still be there.

Try those things and do the defrag when all this is done. Never defrag while doing other tasks as it is pointless.

Did defrag and scan but not much improvement.

Greetings,

There's not much to disable in Your case. Hmm. It's either HP Utility You most likely use [quick launch, and osd, for notifications], or intel stuff [persistence, and pro set].

Can You try uninstalling KiS and MalwareBytes? Just for the time being, whether it won't fix the trouble?
