Specs:

  • ■ Core i7 920 CPU
    ■ EVGA SLI LE Mobo
    ■ GTX 970
    ■ Corsair Dominator 6gb ram
    ■ Corsair TX 750w psu
    ■ 1 ssd
    ■ 4 hdd

While playing a game, the screen will suddenly turn black, the audio will begin repeating the last note heard rapidly (so rapidly it almost sounds like a tone), and then the computer will reset. It sucessfully resets, and I can re-enter windows.

Some things you should know:

  • ■ About half the times I boot my system lately, it will not boot completely. It gives me the motherboard code "8d," which means "Enable Parity Check" (in the manual). No idea what is going on here.

    ■ I ran memtest and the memory seems fine.

    ■ The 12v rail is reading at 11.66v in the bios health status. It reads at 10.56v in speedfan.

How can I narrow down the problem? I'm thinking that it is either the PSU or motherboard. Maybe GPU, but I doubt it because the GTX 970 is so new (runnin great for 2 months).

Solution
This wont help you much, but your running a GTX970 in a system that's 5 years and older so there will be compatibility issues and bottlenecks with that CPU

FYI 8D is a Memory Parity Check Error - see here - http://forums.evga.com/8d-error-code-m575497.aspx Your system is old and likely getting worn out unfortunately, might be time for some new RAM as a starting point, a new Mobo and CPU wouldn't hurt either - something with SATA III for better SSD performance and so forth. But definitely test the RAM chips, sounds like one of them is on the way out.

Is it possible that I need a higher wattage psu?

EDIT: The PSU is just out of warranty. I bought it in Octover 2009, and it had a five year warranty. I could just try buying a new one from newegg and testing it.

I also wonder if the motherboard needs a new battery? The motherboard is six years old at this point, just like the PSU

failed cmos batterys gice you the wrong date and time at post..or not post.. if your friends with a local shop (tv or pc repair have them read the 12v line with a volt meter if it close to what the mb read then it cap age...after 5-6 years some of the older power supply caps dry out and the units can fail. see if there was any recall on the unit and you can try and send an email to the ps vendor sometime they give you an rma one shot if it close to whe nthe warranty ended,.
