Hello,
I've been searching for an answer for my unknown issue that I'm having with my system.

Here are the symptoms: While playing or browsing the internet randomly my system will make a thunk noise kind of like it lost power or something but just a metallic sounding thunk. Then my main monitor MG248QR Asus will black out for a split second and then turn back on normal. No idea whats the cause my second monitor a Nec e231w doesnt experiance this issue.

Things I've tried: windows 10 fresh install, driver updates, RMA rx480, Swap out monitor for same one, Ram rotation (new ram), new cpu, new psu, new mobo, new case, new gpu (mainly was in the process of upgrading anyways but issues presisted before all parts swap.

Things I havent tried: Buying a UPS or possibly getting a better surge strip (current one is a low rated one and i have 2 monitors and system connected to it allong with speakers might be much. (thats all i can think of unless you guys can suggest me some other diagnostics).

Current system // Former system (both setups had the issue)
i7 8700k // i7 6700k
gigabyte gaming 7 z370 // asus z170 ? model
gskill trident 2x8 3000 // Crucial 2x8 2133
evga power supply 700 watt gold rated // seasonic bronze 600watt
evga 1080 ti dual fan (forgot model at the moment) // Sapphire Rx480 4gb edition
random raidmax case with decent airflow 6 fractal fans (2 on rad intake) 4 on top and back of case outake // Matx corsair 88r 120 rad with 2 outake fan
coolermaster mastercool rgb 240 rad // ? brand aio 120mm
WD black nvme 256gb+4tb hybrid seagate+ 2x 240 inland ssd // 256gb crucial ? + 2tb wd blue
Monitors and accessories hooked up: Asus248qr 144hz+nec e231w 60hz, C930 webcam, blue yeti, a20 headset, Logitech MC+KB, 3 usb accessories (chargers data wires) speakers in 3.5
I may have missed an item.

If you feel like you know what might be the issue just throw up some theories or if your experiancing something similar late me know I honestly have had this issue for near a year now. Its not a HUGE deal but it does happen every day or so and can be annoying if im playing a game. I tend to be at work so usually i never see it happen more then once but on my off days i get it through the day.

Please and thank you for your time,
Kink

Cables connecting the GPU to the monitors.

There's a reason savvy folks are buying ACCELL cables with lifetime warranties which are, in addition, Display Port certified.
Are you talking about which ones are connected or the issue is the connection? the cables I have used or swap between
Asus Monitor - Provided DP, Insignia DP, Amazon Basics, Accell Ultra AV DP - HDMI insignia and provided - Currently using DVI-D/I dual link idk what brand but spent like 20$ on it for 5ft cable from microcenter a few years back.
NEC monitor uses various combos through the years but never gets the screen issue just the asus one (on second asus monitor now)

So let me get this straight, you have tested EVERY SINGLE CABLE IN THE MARKET INCLUDING ACCELL's, but the problem isn't with the cables, it's ASUS they have circulated a defective line of monitors.

Dunno man, kinda hard to buy all that.

not every single cable but i have accell DP cables and some others (I used to work at frys/bestbuy) so sourcing cables was not very difficult or expensive. I am just informing you what cables I have used in the process of trying to figure out whats wrong with it. Maybe it is a bad monitor. Like i said in my original post I warranty swapped this monitor with the same exact one and both had this issues and its been nearly 2 years so yes I have gone through a few cables. I mainly opened the thread as an open discussion and to try and pinpoint what might be the issue it could be a number of things thats why I have narrowed it down to the possibility im using a shitty surge protector/need a UPS/or possibly my house has shit wiring (which there is nothing i can do about it but would be nice to know thats whats causing it.).

Currently I am running of my IGPU to see if the issue happens again.

Try plugging your Asus monitor into the motherboards back panel and use the i7 8700k's built in graphics to see if it still experience the same problem.
Its been a couple of hours and doesnt seem to have the issue but then again I havent been doing anything intensive I will let you know if it happens again. If it doesnt I think it may be the power delivery to the gpu right?

Do you have an idea where the metallic thunk sound is coming from? Is it coming from Inside the PC case or from the monitor? Is the sound coming through your speakers?
Seems to be coming from inside the pc. Thats why I originally thought it could be my PSU swapping from a 620watt bronze >700watt gold. Also the IGPU seemed to preduce the issue a lot less but that may be due to low activity as in (file management). So i think the issue is scaling with the power draw of my GPU (low task-low issue ---> high task-high issue) I am considering buying a UPS and see if i can isolate possibly the fact that my wall may be fluctuating current through a regular surge protector
