currently i have a Asus Z-97A the way its video card slots are set up (two) and not working for me with SLI for two ZOTAC 1070 amx! extremes so far i've ran into the problem of ordering a 3 slot sli bridge and end up sending it back because it was too short so now i just got the 4 slot bridge in the mail...its too long !!ahh! come on.. so i guess i need to replace this mobo not enough money to upgrade cpu so just need to find a good 1150 but with better placement of the video card slots id prefer MSI due to their quality and strength of the video card ports

and it all started with me buying 1 new video card to support my new a 1440p 165ghz screen ..the never ending story aka pc wants to be rebuilt but i cant afford that after recent upgrades already lol, the plan was to upgrade the screen and get a stronger video card, then noticed id need sli to get 165fps

ok now since the graphics cards are so large they made me forget that there is more ports behind them hidden currently..yeah i feel dumb now but i still dont know if it will work because from the small bit that i know plug the first one in the top slot (that leaving only 1 bottom slot open for the second one) so ill see if i can move the top one down one.. , still recommend me an msi

Solution
You really shouldn't need to replace your motherboard as two ribbon SLI bridges would probably work fine at that resolution/refresh rate. I would try this first before going through the hassle of getting another motherboard and having to swap everything out. And yes your current motherboard works fine for SLI as the two PCIE slots will run at x8.

At higher resolutions then the HB bridge would be needed.

Solution
just messed around with it and changing slots isnt an option they're in the right slots due to thickness, one in top slot and bottom slot

hmm ribbon sli bridges!? yeah iv just tried solid ones so far none successful , also i measured the distance it needs to be, 4 1/8th

alright ordered one of the correct size this time..this wasn,t a fun experience i did ask before i ordered the first one and someone said the 3 way would work so thats why i messed up the first time the second time was me thinking the 3 way too short lets get a 4 way then, so NOW i have the CORRECT answer, thanks

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97A/ i have a bridge that fits now and everything is hooked up right i found my extra psu cables , but sli does not want to show up in nvidia control panel for some reason i have tryed reinstalling drivers manualy , with geforce and with software (which crashed my computer and took some annoying minutes getting it back to normal) also tried using the different gpu slots that didnt work because it didnt show the second card in my system so the way i have it currently is the correct way, they both show up sli bridge is on mobo says it supports sli yet sli does not work :/

That's odd, the motherboard does support SLI. I have to say I ran into a issue awhile back where my motherboard supported SLI (ran fine until we had a bad storm) and I lost power so I booted the system up afterwards and even though both cards were in the correct slot and showed up in Device Manager for some reason it didn't allow me to enable SLI again. I figured it was a semi-damaged PCIE slot post storm and ended up getting a different board.

Here is a list of Z97 SLI motherboards.
