Help me fix Steam!

I just re-installed Steam, and downloaded Portal, along with Portal 2. I click the "Play" button and it says "Preparing to Launch Portal."

Then nothing happens.

Yet it says I played it that day if I click it.

PLEASE HELP!

My suggestion, don't use steam, use Origin instead. I've had nothing but problems with Steam, especially with the offline mode, Origin is much easier to use and seems to be much more stable. Just my opinion.

Is Origin only for EA Games? Just seems like I've had a really hard time with Steam.
