how do i get a tutorial on the configuration of my dell precision t3500 before upgrading the ram and memory.

in some 'verbiage' RAM and memory mean the same thing. Do you mean hard drive?

The X 58 chipset supports 3 channel memory so buy sets of 3 modules. The memory controller is on the CPU so speed can vary with that.
45nm Nehalems will run at 1066-800 speeds and may slow down with more than 3 modules. Faster 32nm Xeons will run at 1333 speed, i7 at 1066. But check each CPU data sheet, and BIOS updates may improve things also. 48GB capacity is reported to work.
