Help me! I think my GPU is dead!

Last night I went to bed like normal. When I woke up, I realized the firmilliar hum of my computer had stopped. I thought it was nothing and I'd just have to press the power button. Not the case. I have spent the past two hours attempting to troubleshoot the issue. I have narrowed it down to the 6 pin power plug on the GPU. Everything works normally until that plug is utilized. If the 6 pin is inserted, the pc will shut down instantly. Power is not the issue as it has run perfectly for over a year. If my suspicions are correct, I the 6 pin power plug somehow got shorted and I will need to get a new card. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. I'd like to try everything before buying a new card!

I would guess that the PSU is the most likely problem. Power supplies degrade over time (especially if they are a cheap PSU to begin with).

What is the component list?

You can switch out the power supply to test it. You can try a different 6 + 2 pin PCIE cable to test your theory of a "shorted 6-pin cable".

Sounds like a shorted card to me, being a 1070 most likely under warranty so RMA through MSI should work.

If the cable was shorted the computer would not start with it not plugged in!

Also to test the graphics card, try it in another PC.

That power supply does have another 6+2 PCIE cable.

How old is the GTX1070?

Another possibility to test the GPU is to take it to a PC repair shop and have them test it on one of their systems (to determine if the GPU is faulty).
