So im bad at mac os (i work with windows almost exclusively) and i recently came into possesion of a imac with a dead hdd, so i replaced the hdd and threw in a osx lion install disc i had and i got the error of mac cant install restart or boot time machine restore. Is there something im missing?

Which iMac model?
Try holding Command-Option-r while booting before the chime happens. If it is a recent enough model it should start internet recovery.

Please note. If you are using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Sometimes they won't connect fast enough to register the keystroke. In which case you need to plugin a USB keyboard.
If internet recovery is not an option. Try a PRAM and NVRAM reset. Then try installing again.
