Pretty set on purchasing the i5 6600K. Have been out of the game for quite some time (last build was in 2010). Anyways I will be using the setup mainly to game and watch videos/browse. I would like to note that I am also going to be purchasing an UW monitor (34 inch most likely) and am wondering if I want freesync is a "display port" a requirement? Have zero experience with DP. Is this an output that the motherboard should provide if I want to move to an UW setup?

Yes, planning on OC'ing the CPU. However I don't want to pay a premium to "OC" my motherboard and/or RAM. Just making this a sidenote because I generally don't believe in or utilize gamer marketed components. Would rather spend the $ elsewhere as long as the component fits my requirements.

Ah so its just the GPU that has a DisplayPort? I currently utilize an HDMI, mini HDMI, and two DVIs on my GTX 760. Not 100% sure if it has a DisplayPort to be honest, although I am planning on getting either the 1070 or a 980ti unless I can find a great deal on an AMD to run an eventual UW monitor.

Well budget for a motherboard would ideally be <$150 and RAM... I'm not exactly sure. I just want RAM that does the job (16gb is preferred), I don't need to "OC" my RAM or anything crazy but I want DDR4 that much I know.

Here's a potential build, with the caveat that you didn't give any information to go on other than you wanted a 34" UW monitor. I put in a GTX 1070 GPU ~$400...who knows what their actual price will be when they hit the streets. You could look at the price of the 970's and 980's. The 980ti could be of particular value when the 10xx releases. While you might not want "gamer" marketed components, you are looking at a Z170 to overclock. I threw in a 1x16gb DDR4-3200 ram for overclocking, you can decide if you need more. This mobo can handle 64gb (4x16) so 1x16 is a good start. You will probably want an SSD and an HDD, so I put a 256gb ssd and a 2tb hdd. You could change them as you wish. There's nothing that screams "gaming" about this rig, it's in an elegant box. Don't know if you needed an internal optical drive or an OS, but I included them.

Updated to add...the mobo would have integrated graphics, and you would not want to use that with the quality monitor you're aiming for. The GPU will have the ports you need. I threw this build together before you posted your followup, it's like I was reading your mind...DDR4, 16gb ram...

Alright sorry, looking back I guess I wasn't very clear (I'm at work shhh..) anyways I'm essentially upgrading my old build. So I have an OS/SSD/HD/PSU all of that. At this point in time looking to upgrade my motherboard (would like to keep around $150), RAM (all I know is I want 16gb, but don't know about branding etc, suggestions please) and then already set on the i5. As far as GPU I currently have a 760 but have no idea weather or not this has a DisplayPort.

As far as games, I don't need to play anything at ULTRA settings (TW3 for example) but I typically play everything and every genre for the most part. Just kind of want to move from my triple monitor setup to an UW and likely keep a 24inch as a secondary monitor. Want to be able to support 21:9 on decent settings... thinking about the 1070 down the line or the flagship AMD (used possibly) once Polaris hits.

From that build: you require a cpu cooler, and here's the RAM and mobo

CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($34.50)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 5 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($139.99 @ Micro Center)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (1 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory ($82.99 @ Newegg)

I am currently running a GTX 780,and my son is running a GTX 970, and we are both very pleased. That 760 should support it, compatibility checks come out okay, just might not be at the highest resolution. I think it wise to hold up a few months on a gpu and compare the Nvidia Pascal 10XX line and the AMD Polaris 4XX line, that way real data can be shared, instead of leaked and rumored, and their can be better informed side by side comparisons.

So I have narrowed it down to a few boards the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 5, Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 7, MSI Z170A Gaming M3, and Asus Z170-A. Any thoughts on the comparison?

Thanks for your help so far btw.
