help me overclock my cpu/ram!

hi all..

Was thinking of getting 2x1048 of Patriot dual channel viper 1066mhz ram, to go along with my athlon 64 x2 6400+ cpu.

I was wondering if I could get my FSB to match the speed of the ram.

does 1066mhz ram really run at that speed? or is it 533mhz doubled?

i'm trying to get the closest ratio between my cpu and ram that will run as fast as possible.

I understand overclocking ram/fsb has to do with ratios like 1:1 4:5 etc.

They sold out of the black box edition of the x2 6400, but I would like to at least overclock the FSB because the multiplier is locked. But most of all, I want a good correlation between my cpu and ram

i'm not that good with changing Ram timings.. hopefully I can just up the clock speeds.

ram will run at half it's listed speed because it is "dual" channel, therefore 533.

That is incorrect. It shows up as 533MHz because DDR2 stands for Double Data Rate, so you'll have to multiply it by 2.

i dont think youll get much more fsb than what your 6400+ has stock
its been a while, but i think mine (6400+ black edition) topped out at about 220 with the 16x multiplier

I think both Evilonigiri and Beurling are tyring to say the same thing. If your bus speed was 533, and you run at 1:1 then you end up with 1066.

I think the issue is the wording "dual channel" and "double data rate", which are not the same.

not sure how much different am2 is from 939 but I'm currently running my 4400+ x2 at 300 fsb, had to drop the multi from 11 to 8 though, so I would think it is possible to hit the same fsb speeds if you drop your multi and ht multi enough.

Hmm, and I thought that you HAD to OC the ram on athalon 64's because its BUILT IN memory controller is ddr2 800 Native. The am2+ new junk is 1066.

edit: from what i heard you cant lower it locked, so, i went ahead and pulled the trigger and got the BE. thanks for keeping these forums up and running to help people decide. will post when i get it going.

Your 180 degrees turned around there. All the normal X2s can have the multi lowered, but only Black Edition procs can have it raised.

As an aside, you should be able to lower your multiplyer, however I wouldnt bet on hitting 533. Depending on chipset, you might get up to like 350, maybe 400, but thats gonna be about it.

Only AM2+ processors will run ram at 1066 without upping the FSB. And you should be able to run the FSB at the max rated speed for your motherboard... most motherboards this is 260+, some well over 300. I am currently running my 5000+ BE with a FSB of 305 X 10.5 (3.2ghz) with my ram at 5-5-5-15 1066.
