Hey everyone, I will recently be upgrading my system and am looking for opinions on GPU's. My current set up is as follows:
Mobo: MSI 970A-G43

CPU: AMD FX-6300 Black edition

Cooling: H80i self contained water loop.

RAM: G.Skill Sniper 8GB

GPU: Radeon HD 7770 OC

PSU: Corsair GS700 700W, non-modular 🙁

Case: Sentey Spider GS700

OS: Win 8.1 64-bit

I've been looking at the R9 290/290x series cards and am willing to spend about $500 USD on a card, I guess I'm just looking for suggestions that my system can handle wattage wise since the 290/290x both say 750W and that makes me a bit uncomfortable. I want to max games out and mod the shit out of my skyrim also.

Solution

Your PSU is a good quality one and should run an R9 290 just fine. As for the actual 290, the Vapor-X is the best model, but not at all worth it over the Tri-X (Here in Canada, the Vapor-X is around $80 more). The Tri-X is what I'd consider to be the 2nd best model and you will easily be able to overclock to 290x levels of performance while maintaining safe temps

In the not too far future I plan on moving on up to an FX-8320, or else I would definitely get the 280x. I still might, but I'd prefer a 290(no x)

If you are moving to an FX 8320 then yes, I would highly recommend the R9 290

Yeah man I totally wanted to do that, but you know I had to build my PC on a budget at the time since I needed one for college, my old one was going out and I certainly wan't going to buy another pre-made, so I had to get a Mobo that doesn't support the 8350, and has small VRM's so the OC game is weak for CPU's. The CPU and MOBO are on my list though. I may buy them together in a few months when money/time permits and get a 290 now.

BTW what I'm most worried about is whether my 700W PSU can handle a 290, it has 2 6+2 connectors available.

Corsair GS700 700W PSU Bronze certified. I have suspected it's good, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, also if I was going the 290 route, Vapor-X, Tri-x, or is there another card just as good I should consider?

I was thinking that myself, I've heard you can get 290x performance out of a 290 by OC'ing it. I will probably settle for a 290 then, any particular ones? I was looking at the Tri-x, or Vapor-x.

Awesome thanks a lot! I will be doing that in the next few days when I get paid out! :3 also one more thing, is Directron any good? http://www.directron.com/112270040g.html?gsear=1

I'm not sure about Directron, but it looks pretty familiar to Canada's NCIX. Either way, if Directron gives you a bad card you can just RMA it to Sapphire and get a new one for free
