can i upgrade my x51 from i5 to i7 then put a new GTX 760 in my tower does it need altering in any other way and does this even work

By X51 I suppose you a mean a dell alienware desktop? Depending on what model you have and how old it is, you could upgrade the i5 cpu to an i7, but to run a GTX 760 with an i7 is not really worth it over an i5. I would stick with the i5 and get a better videocard than the GTX 760, an R9 280 for instance.
