i have a older system bought about 5 years ago .it has served me well . recently i starting using a drone simulator and that software is running my gpu at 100% . runs the cpu about 55% .i can only run this sim for maybe 20-25 minutes before my whole system just crashes . i suspect it is the gpu overheating .
i noticed only 1 fan of the 2 on the board is running also .
my current gpu is a geforce gtx 660 .i could use a upgrade . here are my pc specs
amd athalon x4 860k quad core 3.70 ghz
16gb of ddr3 ram
windows 10 pro
600 watt power supply .

i need a pci express 3.0 card .

i know what your going to say ,buy a whole new pc . but humor me ,is there a card i can upgrade too that wont break the bank as i dont want to spend alot on this older pc but i am quite confident what i have here can run this simulator with nothing more then a better card .

should both fans be running all the time on my current card? or does fan 2 kick in under heavy load ?

thanks

If the 2nd fan isn't running while the GPU has been at 100% load for a few minutes, it or its fan header is almost certainly dead.

Since your simulator is using about 50% of your CPU, the absolute fastest GPU that would make sense to buy would be something about twice as fast, which would be something like a GTX1060/6GB or the RX5500/8GB if you can get either for a reasonable price.

Keep in mind that most software, especially user-interactive stuff, usually bottlenecks on a a thread somewhere long before hitting 100% CPU usage. You may not see anywhere near 2X performance from having a GPU 2X as fast.
