Help me with my 486, please?

I have two old PC:s,

Compaq 486DX266/12RAM/545HD (a box with monitor and motherboard 2 in 1, really ugly)

AST 486SX25/8RAM/170HD(desktop with separate 15" monitor)

I don´t need two shitty ones so I put the goodies from hte Compaq in the AST desktop, RAM, HD, soundcard & CPU.

I put the CPU in the upgrade socket.

The thing is that the BIOS says the CPU is clocked at 50 MHz? Could it be the motherboard that is limited? Would be strange considering it has a bunch of jumpers to specify what kind of CPU resides in the upgrade socket, choices are: 486, 486 DX/2, 486 OverDrive and some more

A week ago I flashed the BIOS, wondering if the problem was with the old BIOS and now the CPU speed info is nowhere to be found.

It works fine and does what I want it to (Warcraft 2 and qbasic Gorillas) but I´m wondering if the new BIOS fixed it...

Just spend another $20 and get a pentium 100 to 150. 486 has no math processor on the chip, its slow as balls

Did you get this on loan from the devil? My god please burn it...burn..burn. Prices are sooooo low for new comps (especially if you or someone you know can build it) it's not worth doing ANYTHING to that besides....burning it. Do i sound emotional? just looking out for you're sanity.

hey man I remember upgrading my 486 33mhz up to a massive 8 mg of ram in order to play wcII. worked great, but thats all it was good for.
if any of you 486 playa haters got any old puter stuff layin around send em my way

your motherboard is still running @ 25Mhz, see if you can set it at 33.
A dx2 runs twice the motherboard speed.

Correction Oni.... The 486 SX has no math co processor, the DX does .....

Yes, you have to see if there is a jumper anywhere to make your bus speed 33MHz. And your DX does have a math co-processor.

"...but thats all it was good for..." Well.. 486 can do MANY good things. Even some, today's CPUs can't. Like Playng some old games 😛. Even Duke3D runs smoothly. I remember good old day's playng Warcraft II in network )

But mostly, codeworking/programming... Its good to start with some slow PC, cose then you learn to write faster codes. 286 is even better to start...
