My 9800s are giving me fits again.
I was doing some 'work' in windows xp pro today and the screen just suddenly goes black, I wasnt doing anything but web browsing. The system doesnt respond to any key combos.
So I eventually hit restart and it comes to the windows xp pro loading screen then goes black as if it were about to take me to my welcome screen but it doesnt. It goes black and stays there.
Now I'm getting worried, I was actually worried when the screen suddenly went black when I was webbrowsing..
I had a similar problem (and many others), <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=374098#374098" target="_new">here</A> and <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=374563#374563" target="_new">here</A>.
So I tried what fixed my major problem then, I went into safe mode and uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers in device properties.
Then I rebooted into normal mode and things are back to normal.
This happened while using cat 3.7s. I had numerous problems with cat 3.8s/3.9s. Cat 3.8 problems are outlined in the links provided above.
I've been trying to give these ATI cards a fair chance but I am getting ever closer and closer to Fleabaying these cards (I have two 9800s) and just getting a cheap 4200 to use until some real DX9 games come out (which is becoming ever closer :frown: ).
Does anyone have any good suggestions??
I enjoy these cards, but the problems are obvious and I cant have the screen going blank every few weeks and having all these little quirks.
Its enough that I cant just load the latest drivers and go like I used to be able too.
Please help if anyone knows anything about this issue.
Additional info- 1700+, Nforce2 (epox 8rda), onboard audio, hauppauge wintv go tv tuner (not in use but installed), linksys nic, 2x256mb pc2100 crucial (tightest timings), sapphire radeon 9800NP (flashed to pro and worked perfect but flashed back because I suspected it might not be helping things), maxtor 80gb 8mb cache drive, nforce drivers 3.13 (latest) and cat 3.7s, Windows XP Pro with all updates.
Driver cleaner 2 was used (repeatedly) to remove old GF3 NV drivers and done per the instructions included.
These issues are also happening on my Pentium 4 1.5ghz willamette system with intel chipset mobo but not as frequently because I dont use it much (its the g/f's).
With the amount of issues I've encountered in the last few months I'm about 90% decided I'm getting rid of the cards and going to go back to NV until the NV40 is released but I have been trying to be patient and give this thing fair quarter and you ATI experts a chance to fix whatevers going on.

I just tell it like it is and some can't handle it. If your experience is different, well congratu-fukulation.
