My 9800s are giving me fits again.

I was doing some 'work' in windows xp pro today and the screen just suddenly goes black, I wasnt doing anything but web browsing. The system doesnt respond to any key combos.

So I eventually hit restart and it comes to the windows xp pro loading screen then goes black as if it were about to take me to my welcome screen but it doesnt. It goes black and stays there.

Now I'm getting worried, I was actually worried when the screen suddenly went black when I was webbrowsing..

I had a similar problem (and many others), <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=374098#374098" target="_new">here</A> and <A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=374563#374563" target="_new">here</A>.

So I tried what fixed my major problem then, I went into safe mode and uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers in device properties.

Then I rebooted into normal mode and things are back to normal.

This happened while using cat 3.7s. I had numerous problems with cat 3.8s/3.9s. Cat 3.8 problems are outlined in the links provided above.

I've been trying to give these ATI cards a fair chance but I am getting ever closer and closer to Fleabaying these cards (I have two 9800s) and just getting a cheap 4200 to use until some real DX9 games come out (which is becoming ever closer :frown: ).

Does anyone have any good suggestions??

I enjoy these cards, but the problems are obvious and I cant have the screen going blank every few weeks and having all these little quirks.
Its enough that I cant just load the latest drivers and go like I used to be able too.

Please help if anyone knows anything about this issue.

Additional info- 1700+, Nforce2 (epox 8rda), onboard audio, hauppauge wintv go tv tuner (not in use but installed), linksys nic, 2x256mb pc2100 crucial (tightest timings), sapphire radeon 9800NP (flashed to pro and worked perfect but flashed back because I suspected it might not be helping things), maxtor 80gb 8mb cache drive, nforce drivers 3.13 (latest) and cat 3.7s, Windows XP Pro with all updates.
Driver cleaner 2 was used (repeatedly) to remove old GF3 NV drivers and done per the instructions included.

These issues are also happening on my Pentium 4 1.5ghz willamette system with intel chipset mobo but not as frequently because I dont use it much (its the g/f's).

With the amount of issues I've encountered in the last few months I'm about 90% decided I'm getting rid of the cards and going to go back to NV until the NV40 is released but I have been trying to be patient and give this thing fair quarter and you ATI experts a chance to fix whatevers going on.

I just tell it like it is and some can't handle it. If your experience is different, well congratu-fukulation.

I use a Enermax 350watt PSU, its a whisper quiet model with heat sensor and two fans, I don't know the model number.
Case is an Antec SX300(?) it has two 80mm fans in front and one in the back, my temps are generally very very low for air cooling. My cpu cooler is a Vantec Aeroflow... sorry, I just like talking about this system  .

yeah thats quite possible your problem there man, you need more power.

how long you had your 9800p?

You needed more than a 430 watt PSU?
Or was it just old and unreliable?

To answer your question I've had them for probably nearly a good six months.

Does it draw the same amount of power if I'm gaming or web browsing?
Its also strange that a driver reload fixed it, if my PSU is too weak. Or does the weak power cause the drivers to corrupt?

nah the psu was a reliable, new one and yeah for what i was running i needed more; ie. i had three hard drives, a dvdrw, soundblaster 5.1, and so on. I had a lotta peripherals that took power as well.

it shouldnt be that taxing just web-browsing... thats wierd.

could be the driverload you had earlier could have been corrupted. weak power would nt corrupt the drivers though(after there loaded.)

are you still having problems with it?

I have your answer but it will cost you! Haha!

I think you had the same problem I did. The EXACT same thing happened to me. I was using Mozilla BETA at the time, but I have now figured out the problem.

I will now make you work for it by linking to other posts. Because I'm a little drunk, and of course EVIL!

<A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=371102#371102" target="_new">Here's a link</A> (original is too old to edit for my evil purposes) click and follow the white rabbit (no white wabbit, just click).

It was fun doing the click your own adventure. Anywhoo, that's what I think it is. That was the very same crashing I was getting along with that other error. Try the fix, and see what happens. If I'm wrong, well at least you had a little adventure.

I'm serious, I would get black screen no response and then when I reboot I would get the Windows error message. Of course that's just my guess. I have an Enermax PSU as well (yeah I run an R9600P), and they are VERY good, I highly doubt it's that unless you have tons of fans, lights, raided drives etc., they are underrated, not overrated PSUs. I highly doubt that is the cause.

ROFL!!!

That was pretty fun!

Fastwrites is off now, I hope that fixes it. The problem doesnt happen often, probably once every few weeks so only time will tell if it is fixed.

Dont most drunk people fall over themselves? Your making click your own adventures??
What do you do when your sober?

Thx for all the fun and excitement.

It happens so rarely and at anytime that it will be a while till I know if I'm still having problems (I tried the fastwrites off fix). The computer is on 24/7 and it takes a long time for it too do it considering.

The funny thing is that's exactly it. It only happened every once in a while. But with the Mozilla Beta it happened like every frickin' day. So of course I thought it was the Beta. Then when I started running the benchmark suite. 3Dmk03 in particular I was getting that error again and it was exactly the same, it would freeze for 2-3 seconds in the CPU test whihc looks like Game Test 1, and then the screen would go black with no response no nothing (it had caused issues in Morrowind too doing the exact same thing after about 2-5 mins of playing).
It's really annoying because you would think a feature like that would always be an issue under heavy stress. But I guess it's the right combo that does it. I hope that's it, it's funny because when you said it just clicked immediately, 'HEY, that's what I had!'.

Anywhoo glad you enjoyed the click your own adventure. When I'm a little hazy I can still function, so it was just something to do (I become more 'creative' with the addition of certain 'de-stimulants'), years of practice in Montreal (Univ. party town that place [aka BEST place on Earth IMO  ]) has helped me function quite well. Especially after having to find a great place for 'breakfast' while still topped-up. Mmmm Ben's, Schwartz's, Fairmont Bagel, L'Habitant, AAAaaaahhhh! 😱

BTW, have you tried using the Shader effects on COD? I really think that that will add 10% more playability to most games. Sure it's not much but it does add some life to the game. Sketch has made me play the demo 3 more times. Love it.

Anywhoo, hope that workaround fixes it for ya.

google toolbar is a usefuil tool, the oinly porblem is some of my spyware removal software sees it as that.

<A HREF="http://www.cameronwilliamson.com" target="_new">-={Apostalic Alcoholic.}=-</A>

I use opera now.
And its customisable personal toolbar is the bestest. very handy.

and does crash or get dumbass popups EVER.

I'm on Firebird now. Love it. Lean, Tabbed, and blocks pop-ups and spam with little effort.

BTW, did you patch IE AGAIN this week. Same goes for OPERA users.

Ahhhh yet another reason to love Mozilla IMO.

BTW, it wasn't a Mozilla issue so much as a Fast Writes issue.

I use IE with googlebar. Pretty slick I think.
Especially when browsing in fullscreen mode.

<A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/kinney82/desktop.jpg" target="_new">Heres a pic</A> of how I browse most of the time.
For those who have never browsed with IE in fullscreen its just F11.. I use that occasionally as I only run 1024x768.

BTW I love Windows MP9 too and thats Robin Hood Men in Tights in the corner but it came out black. I used winamp for years but had alot of trouble with the newer completely skinnable version crashing.

I like Microsoft, they make good stuff.
Its not like any enthusiasts pay for it anyway so I dont know why everyone hates them...

edit- heres fullscreen browsing, nothing <A HREF="http://www.geocities.com/kinney82/fullbrowse.jpg" target="_new">exciting</A>.
You have to right click and copy the shortcut to get it to work in a browser because Geocities doesnt allow linking as far as I can tell.

I recently also just got a black screen when running Aqua Mark3. First time on my system since I installed my AIW 9800Pro. I also got a page error when I shut down. This happened twice now in two weeks. Never saw this with my old 9600 Pro & I ran it pretty hard (525/325 all the time) very stable. I was clocking the 9800Pro @ (414/360) and fast writes are on. Before I read this I was thinking it might be the PS based on the relatively poor GPU OC. Any thoughts?
