Hi, my dell laptop is not booting and I dont know if the problem is in the hard drive or the system software so how do I know? And how to reinstall windows 8 (I will buy a windows 8 DVD)?

Solution
2000-0142 means your hard drive bad.

Try reseating your hard drive and then rerunning Diags. If it still fails you have your self a dead hard drive.

Check to see if your system still has warranty, if it does contact Dell and they will replace it depending on your warranty. If it doesn't you will have to buy a new hard drive either from Dell or any other 3rd party vendor www.newegg.com is a safe computer hardware site. Also any local electronic stores should have them for sale.

Can check at www.dell.com/support for your system information.
enter your service tag and you should be able to see your hardware specs and warranties. Also there is a system manual that should show you step by step on how to disconnect your hard drive and...
Not booting means so many different things.

There is bios splash screen (for your laptop it would say dell on it)
May or may not have dos screen with info on it
Then Starting windows
Then windows logn screen
Then your metro start screen.

At what point does it not work right, what errors does it give if any. Need specific infomation to tell if it is software or hardware related.

Well it first brings the bois splash screen then checking media [fail] then black screen for a very long time then the dell logo with "diagnosing your pc..." finally if fails and brings me to a blue screen with options like "Continue" , "advanced options" etc.

whats the service tag of the system?

Try turning on the system as soon as its turning on keep tapping F12 should get you to a menu with an option for Diagnostics run that and see if anything comes up.
