Got a call from the other half said mid way through watching netflix the computer shutdown and wont turn on..

So when I take a look, the internal power button lights up. If I press it, I hear a faint subtle click, but nothing, no fans start spinning, the led display doesnt light up, just doesnt switch on.... On the back side of the board though the clear cmos button is alighted, which i have pressed and held.

If i press and hold the internal power button for a couple of secconds, the lightning strike button lights up which is to perform a complete discharge. Ive pressed and held this to no avail too.

If I hold the power button longer, I can get a blue led (no idea what it represents) on the mobo to light up and flash a few times, but thats it.... That goes out and the boot doesnt commence.....

Any clues wtf could be up?

Update: I removed the cpu and tried to boot it.... The first time it sparked somewhere near the on/off button...... But subsequent attempts it doesnt appear to post, but does light up a red led.....
Removing the cpu power cable it still will post and displays 00 in the led display
I'm starting to think it must be a motherboard short as the obvious answer?

Solution
For starters what are your full system specs so I can get an idea of what you have ?
Also for the problem itself, remove the gpu from the slot, locate the cmos location and find the jumper.
Place the jumper on reset, remove the cord and let it sit for 30 minutes, come back to it and put the jumper into normal.
Now power on the computer, make sure your reset, pwr, hdd and power led cables are in the right in position when you built your computer before.

If it comes on with full led and even with the keyboard plugged in, it should be ok for the moment.
Put gpu back in if it works, make sure its secure and power on the computer.
Now if the computers does not come back on after attempting a cmos reset, get your psu tested or borrow another...

We want to see if the mobo just died or the psu is the real problem.

Oh

Currently everything is unplugged and removed from the board (including all usp, gpu and cpu) except for fans and the power supply, which is a brand new corsair 850w modular power supply, and the board is an MSI x99sx -power AC.

The psu is fine I first suspected the psu because when I shorted the on/off circuit it wouldn't power up, but after connecting a new psu I had the same problem. At that point I discovered that the psu was being shut down whenever the cpu power cable was connected... If I disconnect the cpu power cable, it tries to post, but will not power up with it connected. I've tried with the cpu physically removed and its still the same problem, will post if the cpu power is removed, but not with it connected. Im thinking its some sort of self protect circuit in the psu or mobo shutting it down due to a short on the mobo.

So, I contacted msi for a warranty rma seen as this thing cost an arm and a leg 1yr ago and has a 3yr warranty, and they tell me to request a warrant form, but, when I do that, they say bad luck, were not honouring the warranty as it was purchased in usa and im in Australia... Pricks!

Hmm which tier tech support did you speak with, even though you live in aus and the board was bought in the usa.
Tier 3 tech support shouldn't have had a problem transferring any warrenty to it.
Get your purchase receipts and speak to tier 3 or the highest supervisors and explain everything.
Be nice to them about it, just come right out and tell you don't have another 150+ to spend on at the moment.

As for the mobo replacement, this should do, even though it is usa based, some of those sellers do ship overseas.
Work out a deal with one of them if you need a mobo right now.
