Hi everyone,

I’m building a gaming PC and can’t decide between the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Intel i7-13700K. My primary use is 1440p gaming (AAA titles) with some streaming and light video editing.

Build Plan:

  • GPU: RTX 4070 Ti
  • RAM: 32GB DDR5-6000MHz
  • Cooling: AIO cooler planned
What I’m Looking For:

  1. Best gaming performance (FPS at 1440p)
  2. Cooler and power-efficient CPU
  3. Future-proof for 3-4 years
  4. Overall cost, including motherboard and cooling
Questions:

  1. Is the 3D V-Cache on Ryzen worth it?
  2. Which CPU pairs better with the RTX 4070 Ti?
  3. Any hidden costs for either platform?
Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Thanks!

I would side with the AM5 platform. Ofc, your choice of processor isn't the only thing dictating the build, you're going to have to pair it with a capable motherboard and a dual channel ram kit that has ADM's E.X.P.O advertised on it to get the most out of your platform, not to mention a reliably built PSU to power the entire thing.

My thoughts:
You get fair value with 7800X3D or 13700K.
For gaming, the X3d products are very good. But when running apps like streaming or editing, not so good.
Then, also, as you run hither resolutions, the graphics card becomes much more important than the processor.
My guess is that you would be happier with either and, I think the 13700K will cost a bit less.

Either chip will do just fine with a good twin tower air cooler in a good case.
No need to deal with aio issues.

As to future upgrades, the most likely will be to a stronger graphics card.
Plan on at least a 850w psu of good quality.
Look for one with a 10 year warranty.

It looks like on the gaming side the 7800 will win for the other stuff you might end up losing.

I would choose the 7800x3d, or a 9800x3d if you can get one at a non inflated price. I am not convinced Intel's so called fix, for 13th and 14th gen, actually fixed anything, hence why I haven't upgraded my 12700k to a 14700k like I wanted to. The GPU can handle streaming, with Nvidia's NVENC, so I wouldn't overly worry about core count. Frankly, I wouldn't get a 4070ti though. 7900xt is a bit faster, and a good deal cheaper. You can do AV1, in OBS with the 7900 series cards.
