I'm going to be going to College soon, and I could really use a laptop. The problem is my knowledge of laptops is very limited. I was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions based on my situation. First and foremost it should be something that will be able to do all the things College will require of me, and I plan on being a math major if that's important. I don't think I'll need to be doing any programming or art, however, I would like a laptop that is decent at using video editing software, as I might also want to use it for making video presentations. I have a budget of $700, though I might be able to push it to $1000 if necessary. I could really use some help.

These days, math will require some programming courses (Or you should take them if they aren't in the curriculum) Since high end math models require computer simulations it would be good to have that.

The school should have computers for that purpose though.

If you are talking Microsoft Office, and online math homework, practically any cheap laptop will do. For video editing, any computer with a discrete card and 8GB of memory will be adequate.

Does your university offer any special pricing to students with any hardware vendors? Most do. That would narrow some choices.

All that remains is screen size, resolution, (you might want a full keyboard with numpad), and weight to start narrowing it down.

Like I said, I really have no idea about laptop brands. Is there anyway you could suggest a few models that would get me the most for my price range?
