help needed! linksys router problems

I want to host a Diablo2 lan part in my home. Using cable model, linksys
wireless router. Can not get another computer on my local LAN to connect to
a hosted Other Multiplayer TCP/IP diablo2 game. WAN (internet at large) of
course comes into my router, the my router assigns local ip addresses. My
main computer hosting the game is 192.168.1.100, the other computer in the
adjoining room is 192.168.1.104 (wireless PCI connection; internet
connection established as it can surf web with IE browser).

Neither computer has MS firewall enabled. I even tried setting up game port
forwarding in the router, telling the router to forward ports 4000-4000 and
6112-6119 to the computer with address 192.168.1.100

Any help, tips, ideas? Frustrating, i want to host a LAN party, otherwise
what fricken good is a LAN router?

Tell your router to allow all traffic from computers inside to lan to
other computers inside the lan, regardless of source/destination IP or
port. Most likely the router is blocking ports for internal traffic.
(you still want to block internal to/from external ports, though).

Turn off the IP forwarding that you mentioned. IP forwarding is really
only used to set up a DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) behind a router so that
web servers, database servers, etc can communicate with systems on the
Internet. You would need this to host Open BNet games, for example.

My router died last weekend so I can't give you the settings I use here, but
looking at it another way, what operatiing systems are your two systems
using?

I have had problems getting a win 95 system to talk to a win98se system here
(on my network I have two 95's and 4 98's), different ms op systems seem to
install different network components, and you need to find which is not
fully functional.

Another thing to check is the workgroup for each computer, if they are
different then they won't communicate together, even though each will be
able to access the internet seperately

I am assuming you are using the router with 4 port switch or with 8 port
switch? Once I installed:
Client for microsoft networks
Microsoft family logon
ipx/spx compatible protocol for my ethernet card
tcp/ip for ethernet card
and file and printer sharing - on the win98se systems

On the win95 systems I also added
client for netware
netbeui
netbios support for ipx/spx

Then I could play quake across the lan, as well as c&c and SPWAW. D2/lod I
only play on 3 of the win98se systems so I havn't had to see if it will play
on the lan using a win95 box.

Here I use a 4 port router and a 5 port switch on the uplink port. Every
computer is able to access the internet and I can play lan games just fine.

Have you been able to share drives across the network? If that works then at
least the two computers are talking to each other.

Excellent point, I know the workgroup name is different for the two
computers. And if I host a LAN party, I guess everybody would have to
rename their workgroup to the hosting computer (if this turns out to be the
issue).

4 port, but the second PC is connecting via wireless.

How is that done? I have not seen any router settings to tell the router to
allow that. I thought that was sort of default, always allowed anyhow,
since the LAN by its nature is for an internal network.

But it would not hurt to leave it on, right? in case I want to host a
battlenet game.

Maybe you tell us which OS you have on both PCs, even though from...

I am guessing you are using XP.

If you play within a LAN the IP forwarding inside the router is not needed
at all; you only use it when somebody from outside the LAN wants to join via
internet connection.

Are the PCs able to ping each other and see each other in the network
neighbourhood?

They will, if you install the protocol. It is just left out by the
default installation, but easily added via the Network properties
dialog(ue)
