Question Help Needed to Copy Photos From iCloud to PC

My wife has an iPhone and is set up to store photos on her iCloud account. I would like to copy some of these onto my Windows PC and am struggling to see how to do this.

I have installed "iCloud for Windows", run it and logged into the iCloud account. When I go to Storage then I can see that there are 12.6Gb being used for photos and videos, so, they are all there!

When I go to File Explorer and select "iCloud Drive" then it is empty.

When I go to "Pictures", "iCloud Photos" then there are no photos available.

Can somebody explain how I can find and copy the files to a local HDD on my PC, please?

Well, I think I have done all the steps listed but still cannot see any photos!

Yes, it is already switched on! Thanks for all your replies and efforts to help me

All I want to do is connect the phone and download photos - piece of cake with Android 🙄

Why do Apple make things SO difficult?!?!?

Not sure. Try selecting all of your images that you want transferred and click copy iCloud link and send it to yourself via email and then you should be able to download them on pc.
