Hi!

Got great advice from this forum for my old build 8 years ago, so I'm back again hoping for help with a new build!

My old system is starting to feel a bit slow in workstation mode, also video editing is far from a breeze. And I want to get something with WIN11 compatibility.
Looking to build a new system either from scratch or using current case + PSU.

My usage is 95% workstation with some video editing and 4K video playing. Some light gaming also.

I'm currently running this build:

Intel i5 4570
16GB Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3-1600 DIMM CL9 Dual
Gigabyte H87-HD3 Intel H87 So.1150 Dual Channel
ASUS STRIX-GTX980-DC2OC-4GD5
Fractal define R4
24" (60,96cm) Dell UltraSharp U2412M
730 Watt be quiet! Pure Power L8 CM Modular 80+ Bronze

I have a possibility to get a used 1080ti for not too much money. I think this card might be a good fit for my needs.

Also on the wishlist:

-really good 24" screen
-quiet build (but no water cooling etc. stuff)
-32gb of RAM

What would you say about the 1080ti card and what components would be best bang for buck? Budget around 1000€ + what ever the 1080ti costs.

Thanks in advance! :)

Here's a popular case that comes with a built in fan speed controller.

Phanteks Eclipse P400A Mid Tower Case €88,90

Rear exhaust fan for that case.

ARCTIC P12 PWM PST 120mm 4-Pin Case Fan €6,90

Thank you so much for these! I have a lot of studying to do now!

Any thought on the 1080ti? Is it a card that will get me through say 5 years of video editing + light gaming? Or should I be looking at some other graphics card?

And how much of an improvement would a faster processor be for my usage? Say something like an i5-12600K?

Tough call on the 1080 Ti. If it's a good deal then go for it. Otherwise I'd look at the RTX 3060 Ti.

If I was to upgrade from the 12400F it would be with the i7-12700F and if you go with the i7 you would want this board and cpu cooler.

With your budget, you can buy a very big upgrade.

I like your case, you should be able to reuse it.

You can also keep your psu for a graphics card up to a GTX1080ti.
Here are psu requirements for other graphics cards:
http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page362.htm
If shopping for a GTX1080ti, see if you can't find a founder's edition which exhausts heat directly out the back of your case.
I had one for the longest time and heat was never a problem.

For a processor, even a i3-12100 would be a big upgrade.
Here is a review:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-core-i3-12100-12100f-review/5
But you budget would buy a i5-12400, here is a review:
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-core-i5-12400-review
Each will come with an adequate stock cooler.
The main reason to buy an aftermarket cooler would be to keep noise down when fully loading the pc running multithreaded batch apps. Games will not effectively use more than 6-8 threads.
Intel processors will have a continuous spread of turbo boos performance.
Ranging from 4.3 for the 12100, 4.4 for the 12400, and so on.
The single thread performance is always in play.
Particularly for gaming and the master thread.
Run the cpu-Z bench on your i5-4570, you should get something like 395.
The 12400 will be more like 700. 12600K will be 766.

Noctua keeps a suitability list of coolers for various processors.
Here is the list for the i5-12400:
https://ncc.noctua.at/cpus/model/Intel-Core-i5-12400-1587
A simple NH-U12s or it's budget sibling NH-U12s redux would be fine.
I would try the stock cooler first and see how you do.

I recommend paying a bit more for the non F variants.
It is a small insurance in case you ever have graphics issues.

Generally, intel does not depend on fast ram for performance.
I would think a 2 x 16gb DDR4 3600 kit would be good.
Check on your editing app for guidance there.
Puget systems has good recommendations for various adobe apps.
For photoshop:
https://www.pugetsystems.com/recomm...-Adobe-Photoshop-139/Hardware-Recommendations

Plan on keeping your 24" monitor as a side monitor for apps like email and monitors.
Really consider a larger/wider unit where you can have more open windows or a more immersive game experience. Bust your budget here, a good monitor will be with you for a long time.
Perhaps a QHD 2560 x 1440 QHD unit.
Look for a quality IPS unit with a wider 178/178 unit.
